Is this 2wd or 4wd?
I think that they used the same 4 cyl that came in the Jeeps and if you have a manual then it would be an AX5 tranny (can't handle anything more than a 4cyl motor). A lot of what way you go and what I would suggest to you depends on my first question though along with; What is the purpose of this truck going to be?

You can get a magnum V6 and tranny and swap that in there with the wiring and computer, of course you could do the same with a V8 as well. Whichever way you go, you will have to splice the harness into the one that you have now somewhat. What splices and where I'm not sure if.
Since you have a clutch pedal setup, you can go with an AX15 of NV3500 (stronger of the two). You will want to upgrade your rear axle at the same time. You will also need to change out the torsion bars. I know that those generation Dakotas came with V6s (4x4 models) so if you want something easy to swap in, maybe look into getting a whole vehicle that was in an accident and swap everything in.
