2014 GrandCherokee Summit 5.7

Hi there
I've just had an engine seize at 107,000kms. A lot of smoke and lost all engine oil. No warning lights, just a knocking from engine under load. By the time i got to inside lane and off motorway it was smoking heavily and then seized. mechanic has taken sump off (plastic) and there's been a fire in there that probably exploded causing the hole from where all the oil leaked. It also now has the water going into sump without engine running. No warning at all. has anyone heard of this happening at all.....and what the likely cause is?

Thanks Kerry

If there was an explosion and fire in the oil pan, it sounds like fuel got into the oil and ignited.

I’m going to guess a spark got a hole of some fuel vapors and that caused the fire!!!
just my 2 cents

Hi there....yes that's my mechanic's thoughts also, but then for an explosion you usually need air....

If that was a fire and it sure looks like it was by your pics, you may have a claim with your insurance co. I know water damaged engines after submerging in puddles and cars that had engines burned either electrically or otherwise (fire) were covered by most insurances. I wouldn't discard any of that evidence and contact your insurance co. Most will attempt denial but a call from a lawyer often changes things.

All an Engine is a big air pump.... Moves air in and moves air out.... You were just the odd person that got the rite mixture correct set off the chain of flammable events....

You are correct that you need air to start a fire.....

I would say whatever settlement you get..... Find a used lower mileage motor and have it installed....

Keep us posted on how you come out......
Cheers
