IRS is useless

In 2008, we bought our house and took advantage of a $7,500, non-interest, loan for first time home buyers. We had to pay back $250 each over the next 15 years (it gets paid back through our taxes every year when we file).

Back on February 1st, Heather and I went to H&R Block to have our taxes done. We’ve gone to them for the last few years and have had good luck with them. This was our first year filing jointly. At the end, Heather noticed that for the first time home buyers loan the tax accountant put in “$250” and she questioned him about it asking “Shouldn’t that be $500?”. He replied “No, this is the amount for each”. We looked at each other and then at him and said “OK, you’d know better than us”.

The next day I received an email from H&R Block saying that we should see our refund around February 21st. A few days went by and the IRS sent me an email saying that they have received our taxes and we can expect our return around February 28th. And so now we waited.

The week following February 28th, I went to see if the money had been deposited into my account, it was not there. I went onto the IRS website where it said “Where’s my refund?”. The prior weeks it gave the statement “We have received your taxes and they are being processed. You should expect your tax return on February 28th”. This time, all that it said was “We have received your taxes and they are being processed”. I called up H&R Block about this and they said that they can’t do or see anything and that we should contact the IRS. The next day I went down to the local IRS branch. I dealt with an older woman who didn’t seem to have all of her marbles. She told me “All I can see is that your taxes are in our system. Come back in two weeks if you still don’t have your taxes”. I thanked her and went about my way.

Two weeks go by and I went back to the IRS branch (March 23rd). This time I dealt with a woman in her mid-30s. She informed me that there was an error on my taxes but she couldn’t see what the error was. She made 4 phone calls and nobody picked up on the other end. She asked “did you receive a letter in the mail from the IRS saying that they found an error on your taxes?” I replied “No, I haven’t received anything in the mail”. She then explained how the IRS’s system sends out a letter anytime that they find an error on someone’s taxes. It will say that they need more info from you to correct the error or that they can fix the error without needing any info from you. I told her the only thing I received from the IRS was an email stating they have received my taxes. She replied back “When there is an error found, they will only send a letter in the mail. No emails or phone calls”. She explained the next course of action which was I had to wait 9 more business days before I could file some form that would red flag my taxes and bump them up to the front of the list.

Thanks to work, I couldn’t make it back in time (they sent me out to STL). When I got back, the very next day Heather and I left for our 2 week honeymoon. When we got back, I went right back to the IRS (May 11th). They only person that they had working there was the older woman I had dealt with the first time. I explained that the whole thing to her, she took my tax info and was looking at her computer for about 5 minutes. She said “All I can see is that there is an error with your taxes” and handed me back my taxes. I asked her “I know there is an error, I told you about it 5 minutes ago. What is the error though?”. “I don’t know, it’s not telling me” she replied. “OK, I’d like to file a form to red flag my taxes” and I started telling her about what the other woman had explained to me. She replied “I can’t do that, we don’t have them”. By this time, I’m getting pretty angry. I told her “If you can’t file the forms I need to red flag my taxes and you can’t tell me what the error is, then I suggest you get someone who can.” As I was saying this, I admit, I was raising my voice. I wasn’t loud by any means, but I was stern. I’m assuming it was the manager or supervisor that walked up behind the woman, looked right at me and said “Sir, I’m going to have to ask you to calm down”. I replied “I will not calm down. This is my third time in here trying to get some answers about my taxes and Betty White here is being no help. I talked with Debbie back on March 23rd and she was much more helpful.” “Sir, I’m going to have to ask you to leave” was her response. “I’m not leaving till you people tell me what the ‘error’ with my taxes is. I keep getting told to come back in a few weeks and all I get is the same damn stupid response from you”. About 3 seconds later a security guard put his hand on my shoulder and said “Sir, I’m going to have to ask you to leave”. I turned my head to him and said “Do not touch me. I have no issue pressing assault charges against you for ‘assaulting’ me.” He removed his hand put it in front of me and said “Sir, I’m only going to ask you one more time to leave”. I stood up and was escorted out of the building.

After that I contacted my Rep and Senator, wrote out everything that happened and sent it to them. I was just called from the Senator’s office stating that the error was in fact the loan amount that we are to pay back and that it would be another 4-6 weeks before we would see our tax return.

Needless to say, I'm pretty aggravated that the IRS can tell my Rep and Senator what the issue with my taxes is but not me. I’m pissed with H&R Block because I paid them good money to do my taxes right. I have since been in contact with them telling every person they pass me off to how pissed and disappointed I am with them and that I will tell everyone I can to not deal with H&R Block for their taxes.

Thanks for reading my rant. I need to go punch something multiple times now.

Well we finally got our tax return last week with interest. We were also told by the IRS that we had to claim the interest on our taxes next year due to it being "income".
