1981 prospector-ignition
Have an 81 prospector with a 318 and mega wiring problems. Want the vehicle for a hunting buggy. All I need is for the motor to start and go with as least wires as possible. I have removed most of the wiring. The distributor has a box that sends a signal to the coil, My question is, is there a way around this other than going back to a points system? I dont want to spend the money on a dist. with HEI. And if a points system is the way to go, what year of vehicle do I need to look for that dist. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

hi shawn welcome to the forums
your best way to go this route is to leave the electronic ignition in it way better in every aspect everything is still available on the parts shelf easier to work on and a whole lot less time pulling your hairs out when you could be blastin bambi out of the bushes

Thanks for the reply, I would be more than happy to do that. But this vehicle has had nothing but electrical problems since before I even acquired it. What are the minimum components that I would have to leave to sustain the current ignition system? And again thanks for your time

well shawn the best thing to get would be a repair manual it will have wiring diagrams of your truck and go from there not exactly sure on what you exactly need but id say in the manual it would be able to show you which wires go where and do what with that being said then you could decide what stays and what goes and while your chasin those wires you could find some of those gremlins and fix them

Running
I purchased a wysco hei coil from ebay, wires and a pro comp coil for 135.00 and am up and running with only two wires. A hot for the coil and one for the starter solenoid. Will keep this updated and post pics soon. I am currently working on the paint and bumpers and hopefully before to long will be able to drive from the roof.
