Hey everyone. Well tragic circumstances has presented my girlfriend and me an opportunity to own a 69 GTX which was originally her fathers. He is the original owner and it has under 25,000 miles, always garaged and recently restored. My question is regarding storage, we have a single car garage but it is rather small. Are your standard rented storage spaces suitable for storage? How crucial is temperature control? Any experiences? or is it recommended to clear out the space in the garage and keep it at home? My ultimate goal is preservation and security. Thanks for your help!

Like the others have stated, keep that car where you can see it daily. I don't know were you are located but be sure to take precautions against mice and other vermon if they are common in your area. I went for a ride last fall only to have a 4 foot black snake crawl out from under the dash at 50 mph!

Hope you and your girlfriend can get the GTX, if so could be time to get married to her and the car! Good luck...

Definitely clear out the garage,....I had to do the same thing after buy my last Road Runner. I would rather keep the car close so I can keep and eye on her. Trust no one else to secure you girl

You haven't stated whether you're interested in year-round or just winter storage. Having said this...

If by "standard" rented storage spaces you mean the large commercial operations, heated vs. non-heated, humidity control (temperature isn't as much an issue as humidity) and degree of security will likely vary, so you can achieve your goal of preservation and security, but it'll depend on what you're willing to pay and how far you're willing to travel. I have a '68 Polara 500 and I live in a region of Canada that gets extremes of weather. In winter months, I store the car about an hour drive from me in a former modern chicken coop now used to store cars and boats. It has a concrete floor that has radiant floor heating. The temperature is kept just a few degrees above freezing. Being winter, the environment is suitably dry. The operator is in quite a private location and has an alarm system. I pay $400 for the winter season.

Your small garage is a less ideal environment, but the car will be there for you to use which is probably more important and there are some precautions you can take. To help preserve the condition of the car, first, what is the condition of the garage, especially the floor -- e.g. concrete vs. crushed stone vs. ground/grass? The latter will allow the most humidity so if this is the case, you should do something to improve the floor. During spring/summer/fall, since my garage at home is actually too short to accommodate the entire length of the Polara, I keep it in a portable car shelter on my property that sits on a bed of crushed stone laid over a ground quality vapor barrier. Humidity varies widely, so every two years, I have the car "Krowned" (a proprietary, relatively inexpensive oil-type rustproofing process). You may want to also consider de/humidifiers in the garage depending on the season. To prevent critters from entering/damaging the car, you can place dryer sheets, and a tennis ball in the exhaust pipe(s). Next year, I plan to build a large detached garage with a concrete floor on my property to accommodate all my transportation toys year-round so I won't have to pay for that anymore.

As for security, if you have a home alarm system, can you extend it to include the garage? If you don't have a system, are you willing to pay for one? Apart from that, all you can do is use a steering wheel lock and appropriate door locks/barriers.

Rather than pay for commercial storage, if I were you, I'd optimize your garage space by spending a bit of money. Hope this helps some. Good luck, and take good care of that baby -- the car too!

 

Welcome to the forums and sorry to hear about the circumstances on how you got the car but im guessing you will take good care of her and if you need room just put the girlfriend out in the garage and put it in your bed room with you just kiddin but im with the rest of them keep it close and dry

 

There are two Mopars in the garage. Two cheby's on the driveway and one out in the street.

 

What a great car to own. Im sure your Father in law would appreciate you taking good care of it. I love the 69s, got a Road Runner myself. What color is it? 440 auto? Yea keep it close and protected inside the garage.

 

Thanks for the advice - and so the conclusion is to clear out the garage and keep her close by. I have a new car in the garage now that is going to get the boot - might put that in temporary storage. I think I am going to look into building a garage in the spring.

Its white with a super commando 440 4 speed with the super track pak option - I found the original window sticker and broadcast sheet along with the original keys and everything. I'll do my best to keep it pristine for the next 50 years!
