I just recently purchased a 1986 D100. It has a 318 in right now. I'm considering installing a turbocharger in it for improved power(and gas mileage).
I'll be honest I'm still somewhat of an amateur when it comes to mopar, and even old trucks in general. What kind of work would be required for a project such as this. What parts would I need to purchase, install, and/or upgrade?

Your biggest problem is going to be turbo sizing and tuning. All over the 'net when I read people "getting into" a turbo, many guys give them this advice:
Use a junk / used engine, and PLAN on losing an engine before you get things right. I don't know. The pickups have LOTS of room. One popular scheme on the Darts (less room) is to use reversed RAM / Dakota manifolds or headers, build a crossover under the front of the engine, and plop a single turbo on the right front corner of the engine. There is a number of these builds

Thanks for the suggestion. As superchargers go that's a nice setup.
I'm leaning toward a turbo because they provide boost as well as increasing engine efficiency. And I've heard that superchargers shorten the life of your engine.
I'm not too afraid of fabrication, my truck is a project so I'll be doing a fair bit already. I'm just not sure what the overall process of installing one is like. I'm not sure what is required for intake, carb, air breather etc.
Like I said I'm kinda amateur at all this.
DDodger, thanks I'll check out those links. That's kinda what I was thinking, putting the turbo in the right corner then porting the exhaust right out through the passenger fender. (there's enough room, I checked).
