I don't understand why you don't just build the 360 and be done with it. You can get respectable power out of a properly done 360. Just make sure you have the "balance" correct---360s are externally balanced. I don't know whether the difference is in the flex plate or the converter---I suspect it's in the converter. Any decent auto transmission shop should be able to answer that for you.

I ran a stock 340 with headers in my old '70 RR body for a number of years.

It would stay right with most stock RR 383's
It got excellant mileage
It was a lot of fun to open the hood and display that 'ittle bitty engine down in there
It's lighter than a BB
