Engine Ping
Just joined the forum site - rookie question and issue - apologies to all the mechanically inclined people. I am not that.
Have a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. Dealer serviced - did all recommended work timely - except last six months.
Issue - heard pinging engine noise and took car in for service. The cause - I did not change oil for 11,000 miles. went from 70k to 81k with no oil change.
My 6cyl engine burns / consumes oil as part of the normal use. Did not know this.
So I just had it serviced and was hoping the noise was something else, but it wasn't. Tech told me no oil on dipstick! The service manager told me that the engine would be fine as it had not seized up. I checked driveway and office parking lot and no oil leak.
Questions:
1. Next steps? Should I get a further diagnostic test to understand the engine damage? Is there product that I should use now to address?
2. Service manager downplayed the issue. Should the engine burn oil and should my engine go thru 6 quarts of oil over 11k miles?
3. Should I sell the car? The ping is not bad. Increases with revving engine and then ping drowned out by the engine noise. What is the impairment to selling $ value with a engine ping?
Thank you in advance, KC

KC -
Does the "ping" happen under load or with normal driving?
Anything coming out the exhaust pope (smoke, color)?
Obvious Q: engine light on?
Does the car have a EVIC?

Archer - thanks for the reply. Ping / tap happens with normal driving. even at idle. Exhaust is clear after engine warms up. No smoke. Engine light not on. The EVIC menu is not hidden. You can see a lot of the EVIC menu readings on the dashboard display in the car. I can see the oil pressure - which I thought looked low. Not sure what the appropriate oil pressure readings should be, but it goes up when accelerating. You would have thought this would have been pointed out - if the oil pump was bad? OR a sensor would have gone off.
Why wouldn't my engine temp be high if my oil is low or gone. I do look at that all the time?
Engine temp, trans temp looked good, other stats looked fine.
