Need help identifing a 68 Charger shifter
Hello all...I'm hoping someone can provide me with some 68 B Body shifter facts.
I have a 68 Charger built in April 68. I'm doing a 4-speed conversion from my console 7277 auto to an 18 spline 833 manual transmission. I will be retaining the console. I know that 68's made a change over from the Inland shifter to a Hurst shifter in early production...around April. I also realize that a console shifter is different than a non-console shifter.
Here's the issue...I recently purchased was was described as a B body 4-speed console shifter. Viewing the photos, I thought so too. Once received I did a little more investigation because the angles seem odd. Some aftermarket sites show replacement versions(that look like the one I bought) as fitting a 68 A body console car. Brewers shows an original 68 with a bend about 3 inches up and a second bend much further up. The item I bought has the first bend up about 6 inched with a second bend almost horizontal and angling towards the driver. The kicker is my Paul Herd restoration guide shows the one I have and makes a note that in early 68 the initial Hurst shifter for the Chargers was also interchangable with A bodies??? Is this true? Were there actually 3 different shifters for an early 1968 Charger? Any help would be appreciated. Steve

welcome to the forum
not too sure if they were 3 different shifters
I can tell you that that shifter for your car should be the funky looking one right?
it first bends straight to the driver, then up at an angle

Mine definitely did not have the cue ball at the top. You grasped the shifter with your whole hand and it was horizontal as I recall. Maybe some day I will find a pic of what I had. I had the 2 barrel 383 engine and it was ordered at the dealer and optioned as per the build sheet at that time in 1968(summer).
