new and enthused

Hello all,
I'm a thirty year old with a huge respect for grease monkeys and am looking forward to starting down the mopar path. I have a 2001 5.9 hemi motor and thinking of dropping into a early 1970s mopar. my question is, is this motor worth it, and what would be the best fit for it. I have some experience in the garage and am aware that these are the least often done(ford, chevy are pretty common). thanks for any advice

I'm not sure there is a "best fit." There is documentation on various forums of putting these into just about any Mopar you an think of. An "early A" would not be my first choice, but there are several or at FABO and other sites in 67/ later A's and certainly many many have been swapped into B and E's.

Generally, a truck engine seems to be the best at least in an A. There are differences (I'm not expert) in the front area and alternator mount that seems to make this easier.

Several ways to go on injection --there are folks who will reflash the computer, as well as several aftermarket systems and Megasquirt.

thanks for the info.

alright straight to it the "a" body refers to pre 1970s correct? like I said im new to the refrences so sorry for sounding nieve.
I read up on a story that they make mounts that bolt onto the block for just about any car, but they say that for mopars its better to buy a aftermarket k frame.

Welcome. Choose a car with your heart not your head, maybe one that has some sentimental value to it, because it will test the strength of your relationship. Hard to quit on something you truly love.

Very true words.

that would be the 1970 challenger R/T, with a shaker hood. unfortunately I haven't won the lottery yet, so maybe a duster for starters, relatively cheap starter car for the first couple years. I have lots of time and nothing but ambition, and a nice sized garage

K frame will need modifications. for front steer rack What would be cool is to stroke it to 426 like the original Hemi. There are several aftermarket fuel injection setup available, more so as it becomes a more popular swap. IF you plan on running it hard !!! put some aftermarket connecting rods in the motor.
A "B" body would be easier to fit..

Welcome!

While you may not be able to afford a 1970 challenger R/T, there is no reason you can't build a "clone" R/T with the motor you have. Whatever you do, don't settle for a car just because it will work for you, get one that you love.

What will you be using for a transmission?

Welcome to the forum.... Be sure to check out the Mopar of the Month contest.... My experience is with the Drag Pak cars with the late model hemi. To date the 5.7 has proven to be the strongest bullet... Now granted the street version is different than the DP one. On the pick of the car... Several have given you very good advise... I will agree the most on pick it with your heart and not your head... May take you a little longer to find that just right car but in the long run you will be glad you did.....

You sure it's a 2001 5.9 hemi? I thought the Hemi's debut was in 2002 and it was a 5.7. Maybe yours is a 5.9 Magnum? Either way they're both good motors.

oops

yeah its the 5.9 magnum, my wife totaled a r/t Durango of mine so im thinking of using the motor out of it rather than junk the whole thing. im looking to put a manual trans with it. My best guess is that ill take just the block out of the truck, but cant think of anything else id want to salvage from the truck. any advice?

Remove all engine wiring harnesses computers, relays ect. Don't cut anything [you will eventually cut stuff] but save everything whole, if possible keep the Durango around just in case you forget something. There are plenty of swaps done of this sort and aftermarket wireing kits are available. I was thinking of swapping a 4.7 into my 66 cuda but have since change my mind. Early A body engine bays are quite cramped for a larger motor, the steering shaft and box location are what makes it difficult [however there guys whom have dropped in 383s and 440s in early As with no cutting].

Welcome to the forum.. First off 5.9 is not a hemi it is a magnium. Mopar hemi's are 5.7 and 6.1 in 2001 they were'nt out yet They came out in 2002 and it would of been a 5.7. The 6.1 came out a few years later and the 6.4 came out even later... Second most guys or gals with any knowledge at all, dont want to be called a grease monkey and could be considered offensive. The project you are considering is a big project if it is a hemi cutting and welding if its a magnium motor it not a big deal in any case good luck ....Bill

Thanks for the heads up, wasn't my intention to offend any one. I'm trying to look into the best place for bore and Stroker kits, I'd like get the cid up to a 408 or 410. Anyone know of some good Web sites for these. Or a better question would be to increase hp is the internal upgrade better then a top upgrade? Thanks!
