new to forums. need know how to swap engine.

OK i just got married and my wife bought me a 1973 dodge dart swinger and its a pretty car. but it only has a 225 slant six and its auto so first off i would like to put a 360 maybe 340 if can find right price but i also want to make it manual . i know its going take a lot just need to know where to start ? anything will help would be nice to have parts list and what i should switch first. i know im going have get bigger brakes for the size difference and better rear end i just don't what i need or what size of brakes . no clue what i need for any of it. anything would be a big help.

Save your money for a while It is not cheap maybe $15K depending
Motor mounts from Shumacker www.engine-swaps.com $200 or $200 for a V8 K frame--- LOTS OF INFO TOO !!!!!
A rebuilt HP motor with cam & Aluminum heads $9500 500 hp
if you are going to use an LA style motor get a 318 (340 if you can find one reasonable. smaller main journal than a 360 & it is internally balanced -An advantage with a 4 speed... No special balanced flywheels
A later magnum motor would be good to if you can find a good low mileage used one If you are planning to rebuild a motor ? get a stroker kit with a forged crank 408 CI small block
Trans $3k New kessler 5 speed & drive shaft Maybe a 5 speed from a Dakota
8 3/4 Rear end $1500 with 3.55 gears or 3.91
clutch peddle assembly, 4speed floor tunnel $500
TTI headers $600
This is just estimates for NEW you can cut a lot off by careful shopping used

Congrats on your marriage!

So cool to see that your wife bought you a car! That's awesome!

I happen to agree with TVlynn on this one. If money is no option then disregard the post. But you may want to fix your current car up, make it clean and appealing. And then upgrade. It will cost half as much when you buy someone else's sweet ride.

Just one road you could travel...

First thing I would do is check the rear end You probably have a 7 1/4 it will not last long even with a hopped up 6.. If you are lucky you may have a 8 1/4 which would be fine.. If going to a 360 ? with a 4 speed I would look for a 8 3/4 rear
K frame swap = use factory V8 mounts

Welcome to the Forum, I personally would fix the slanty, if you wanted a v8 car in this market you should have looked for one the money you'll spen you could have bought one, I'm sorry for being up front but you'll spend more money and labor than what it's worth. There are a bunch of Slantys being built both turbo, supercharged and with blowers!!!!!!!! I know of someone with a turbo duster he has a 360 sitting in his garage but built the slanty!!

yep tvlynn is right the 7 1/4 rear is good for nothing. i bought 1 new car 1984 ply fury, 1 new truck 1977 D100, with a 7 1/4s. neither lasted more than 80,000. with low power engines.

Personally, I have always been a V8 fan and didn't think too much of a slant 6 for performance though I have heard of a few that supposedly ran pretty good....

A few months ago, I went down to San Jose to pick up an 8 3/4 3rd member for a friend and I met a guy, all that he has is slant 6s, and apparently they're fast! He opened the hoods on a few of his A bodies and they all had at least one single 4bbl carb on an intake manifold that this guy had engineered and cast, or had cast, with his name cast into it! With an intake, a set of headers and a cam these slant 6 sounded bitchin'!!
One of his cars was a mid sixties Valiant with a Barracuda front end on it, which actually looked very good and had a few stories, too!
I left his house with serious respect for those lowly slant 6s! lol
