Hi all,

My username tells you that my main hobby cars are Edsels, but a close second are slant-six Mopars. I've owned a half-dozen over the years; I cut my teeth on a '64 Savoy I inherited from my uncle (fast car!) and most recently I sold a '67 Dart that was my daily driver for nine years.

I was itching to get a slant six back in my garage, and lo and behold a 50,000 mile super-original garage-kept '77 Volare Coupe showed up on Craigslist screaming for me to buy it. For the last week I've been taking care of all the sitting-for-a-long-time issues a car like this will have (blew an original heater hose yesterday while buzzing around town).

I had great success with my '67 swapping a Carter BBS for it's original Holley 1920, and I'd like to do the same with the '77 and get rid of the leaky old Holley it has now. But because this engine has emissions equipment, I want to make sure I'm on the right track with any swaps. Any and all advice is appreciated.

 

are you going to get rid of the electronic emision? or keep it?

oh and to answer your question, ur good to mod if you dont have that lean burn computer. i think they started putting them on in 78 so u should be good.

Oh and do u have the super six?

 

No Super Six (darn), and many have recommended the conversion assuming I can find the setup. But for now, I'd like to keep this car as stock as possible. Its scary original, wearing most of its original hoses and its wearing tires dated 1997. I don't think its been on the road much at all in the last 15 years. I'd be happy for now just to get it running smoothly and reliably. I also have an overheating problem, so the radiator comes out tonight and we'll get it flow checked and rodded out if necessary. If I fall in love with the car (a definite possibility) then I'll put the time and effort into a Super Six conversion.

It does have a second temp vacuum switch for the EGR hacked into the upper radiator hose. Looks like it got some factory recall work done to it at some time (there's even a second vacuum routing sticker placed over the original.)

its all right its not a super six, as long as its slanted its kool. oh my 73 is as stock as it gets i feel you on that one. you can keep it stock looking but just getting a 2bbl setup boost performance a lil bit. good luck on troubleshooting the over heating problem keep us posted!

Attached are some pics of my new ride. All original, including paint and vinyl canopy roof. I've got a line on some original Mopar rally wheels that I plan to pick up tomorrow and throw under her. With some nice raised white letter tires...yowsa. At least it will look fast.

Oh, and I've decided to put a rebuild kit in the Holley 1945 for now, just to see how that works. Probably just all gunked up from sitting so long. But I'll keep up my search for a Carter BBS, and maybe down the road that Super Six setup.

WOW! i F'n Love it! its prestine! great find. Yeah i cleaned out my Carb before i did anything. good luck looking for that carter i thought i saw one on Ebay, swap meets go there.

Picked up the correct Rally wheels for the Volare today...not perfect, but very servicable and when they get cleaned up they will look sharp on this car. All the center caps are intact, except one has a pencil-tip size spot of road rash in the center. Will dismount the tires and sandblast/paint the steel rims, then buff out the trim rings and center caps.

It looks like the rims and some inner surfaces of the center cap had a silver/argent paint. Anyone know the correct paint to get to match original?

 

You can get the silver ardent paint from the dealer in a spray can. Go easy or it will run..

 

Thanks TVlynn, I think this was a color used on many makes, didn't know that it was still available from dealers. Is there a recommended primer or do you just shoot the paint straight on the cleaned rims?

 

If your dealer doesn't have it you could try Eastwood,s, Yearone ????
