transmission/tail-end
[U]hello, does anyone now if you can change the tail-end of a transmission[U]
i have a 99 ram conversion van i changed the filter and when i opened the pan there was broken bands laying inside it , i found a used transmission but it has the wrong tail-end . can i change it and how difficult is or would it be better to pay to have it changed ? are they sealed units or would it not be any good either
thank you

Without knowing exactly what you have ? It's not that simple. The tail shaft on the later transmissions has the overdrive unit. It sounds like you would also need to change the output shaft?? Total rebuild time !!
update to tail-end trannie post
sorry, the transmission is from a 1999 dodge ram conversion van, 318 motor auto with overdrive, the new used trannie we got is from a dodge ram p/up with the 318 . the bell housing appears to be the same but the tails are same except speedo in different area on tail section.
idk what it came out of exactly except it was a dodge ram 1500 p/up they appear to be the same but the numbers are different on the bell housing and tail end the original is 064-11, 25100-16 the new one is 064-1, 17905-8 the first number is the bell housing the second is the tail end number like i said it is same except the original doesn't have the sensor on the tailend same length and size do the numbers mean anything , are they interchangeable the tailends that is. need good advice do not want to take apart until i now for sure [do not want to brake it] yes the pans are the same

if the only problem is the location of the speedo gear is there any way too use the original cable just re-rout it
too open an old trany is risky the seals could be hard and if they rip you got to replace em/rebuild the trany anyway and since your going to swap output shafts why don't you just rebuild the original if i remember correctly you got to disassemble the entire trany anyways to remove that shaft and the input shafts could be different lock-up vs non-lock-up
if it was me i would rebuild the original its not that hard

i just went through this with my 64 push button. same scenerio. and same outcome. the tailshafts stay with the tailhousing. and the tailshaft is the last part to come out. ya may as well rebuild one. the kit's are the cheapest part if ya put a value on your time. and you know what you have in yours. don't trust the other one just cause it doesn't have metal/babbot in the pan...
