trying to get a 440 started

Hello Members,
I'am new to this forum, I have loved mopars since my older brother bought his 67 cuda. I have found a 69 charger in a guys barn that has been sitting under a tarp since 1980. I cannot get the massive 440 to start. I checked the timing , spark, and fuel. She back fires through the carb. Any one knows if it sounds like the valves are stuck open?

Have you checked the exhaust? I'm thinking it's packed full of acorns, insulation, and dead things. Also, do you know if it ran when parked, or was it sitting because of the backfiring issue? I'd make sure the firing order is correct and that the distributor isn't 180 degrees out.

Are you sure nobody had the distributor out of the engine?

You changed the points and condenser, is the cap clean?

For all you know, it may have had a problem such as a slipped timing chain when parked?

69 -

Since you are getting spark and fuel, odds are your ignition and systems are working.

How did you check the timing if the engine wasn't running.

Two things:

1 To confirm there isn't an exhaust blockage, just disconnect the exhaust at the manifold to pipe connection.

2. Confirm that the distributor is set correctly on cylinder #1, and then check the firing order of the plug wires - on second thought, check the firing order first.

1'st of all thanks to all for your help. I pulled the header off the drivers side already due to having to replace the starter, there was nuts and all sorts of stuff in it. I will now pull the other side off to see if it is the same. I checked the firing order off dtc and that was correct. Tonite I will do a compression test on it. As far as what the guy said whom I bought it from he drove it into the barn and it sat there until I purchased it. It sound like a trial and error type of thing.
Again thanks for all your help guys ! I will post a picture of some of the Mopars in our family. Mopar or No Car correct.
