Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1

BAYTOWN, Texas - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 25th annual O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals presented by Super Start Batteries listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:


Left Lane: Todd Simpson Runs 5.066/171.73, Now #2
Right Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 4.306/289.88, Now #1

Weather conditions: air temperature 83 degrees, relative humidity 60 percent, barometer 29.89 inches, adjusted altitude 2,524 feet, track temperature 114 degrees.

Simpson's engine pop around 800 feet and he coasted on through the 1000 feet. Haddock was straight down the groove with a clean pass.

Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.380/245.90, Now #2
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 6.711/97.57, Now #4

Pedregon was up in smoke early and clicked it off...Head's engine went silent just past half track and he coast past the finish line.

Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.601/238.17, Now #3
Right Lane: Todd Lesenko Runs 5.173/235.76, Now #5

Lesenko started to lose traction and clicked if off. Densham was off the throttle early...

Left Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 4.230/302.62, Now #1
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.550/202.97, Now #4

Wilkerson starts mixing up cylinders early and then bangs around half track before he clicks it off. DeJoria with a good clean pass and was under power as she crossed the finish line the first Funny car of the session...Alexis DeJoria's incremental times: 60ft-0.942 sec., 330ft-2.418, 660ft-3.422/258.57 mph.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 5.924/119.11, Now #9
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.187/303.23, Now #1

Hagan strikes the tires early and clicks it off. Arend with a good clean pass togo to the top of the field. Jeff Arend's incremental times: 60ft-0.924 sec., 330ft-2.377, 660ft-3.379/258.52 mph. Putting the Kalitta cars at the top of the list...

Left Lane: Bob Bode Runs 4.289/292.39, Now #4
Right Lane: Courtney Force Runs 4.150/306.53, Now #1

Force with a great looking pass to go to the number one spot. Courtney Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.909 sec., 330ft-2.354, 660ft-3.349/261.37 mph. Bode with a good clean pass to get into the top half of the show. Bob Bode's incremental times: 60ft-0.933 sec., 330ft-2.420, 660ft-3.452/248.80 mph.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 8.194/71.70, Now #14
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.177/300.66, Now #2

Tasca started to lose traction early and clicked it off...Capps was straight down the groove with a nice pass. Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.908 sec., 330ft-2.355, 660ft-3.362/256.06 mph.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.133/306.19, Now #1
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.212/296.05, Now #5

This was a good drag race with Pedregon going to the number one spot...Cruz Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.910 sec., 330ft-2.342, 660ft-3.333/261.27 mph. force gets into the top half of the show. John Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.913 sec., 330ft-2.360, 660ft-3.383/251.95 mph.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.197/300.80, Now #5
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.760/171.47, Now #13

Beckman starts to lose traction just past half track and clicks it off. Gray launched hard and keep it hooked up to get into the top half of the show. Johnny Gray's incremental times: 60ft-0.925 sec., 330ft-2.365, 660ft-3.377/253.80 mph.

Left Lane: Mike Neff Runs 8.164/87.78, Now #18
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 8.624/79.24, Now #20

They both shake the tires right off the starting line at the same time and they both clicked them off.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.153/256.65, Now #3; Best prior run: 8.624/79.24, Was #20

Weather conditions: air temperature 79 degrees, relative humidity 67 percent, barometer 29.84 inches, adjusted altitude 2,347 feet, track temperature 95 degrees.

Hight launched hard and then started drifting toward the centerline and had to click it off early, but still goes to the number three spot. Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.897 sec., 330ft-2.317, 660ft-3.282/265.06 mph.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 6.983/101.16, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.711/97.57, Was #18
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.123/308.50, Now #1; Best prior run: 8.194/71.70, Was #20

Pedregon starts to lose traction early and clicks it off. Tasca launched hard and was straight dow the groove to go to the number one spot. Bob Tasca III's incremental times: 60ft-0.910 sec., 330ft-2.339, 660ft-3.328/262.08 mph.

Left Lane: Todd Lesenko Runs 4.398/283.55, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.173/235.76, Was #17
Right Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.318/228.11, Now #12; Best prior run: 8.164/87.78, Was #20

Neff's engine went away around 800 feet, but he gets in the show. Mike Neff's incremental times: 60ft-0.908 sec., 330ft-2.329, 660ft-3.336/237.05 mph. Lesenko makes a clean pass, but will not get in the show. Todd Lesenko's incremental times: 60ft-0.964 sec., 330ft-2.491, 660ft-3.541/245.27 mph.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.332/227.34, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.760/171.47, Was #17
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.247/291.45, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.924/119.11, Was #19

Beckman improves, but not enough to get in the show, he will start from scratch tomorrow. Hagan gets into the show...Matt Hagan's incremental times: 60ft-0.903 sec., 330ft-2.377, 660ft-3.382/295.40 mph.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.139/300.00, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.550/202.97, Was #17
Right Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.492/263.72, Now #18; Best prior run: 4.601/238.17, Was #18

Densham clicks it off early as he improves, but not enough to get in the show. Wilkerson launched hard and was straight down the groove into the number three spot. Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.916 sec., 330ft-2.347, 660ft-3.326/261.22 mph.

Left Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 7.132/97.95, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.306/289.88, Was #13
Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.165/297.61, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.380/245.90, Was #16

Haddock is up in smoke early and clicks it off. Head with a really nice pass, straight down the groove to get in the top half of the show. Jim Head's incremental times: 60ft-0.906 sec., 330ft-2.352, 660ft-3.348/257.78 mph.

Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.269/261.17, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.212/296.05, Was #10
Right Lane: Bob Bode Runs 4.296/287.35, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.289/292.39, Was #13

force was on a really nice pass until he started drifting out of the groove and toward the centerline. He pedaled it on the top end and he will not improve. John Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.901 sec., 330ft-2.339, 660ft-3.344/246.12 mph. Bode was straight down the groove, but will not improve and he will not get into the show. Bob Bode's incremental times: 60ft-0.935 sec., 330ft-2.416, 660ft-3.448/248.02 mph.

Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.138/307.37, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.187/303.23, Was #8
Right Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 8.813/74.23, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.230/302.62, Was #11

DeJoria shook right off the starting line and clicked it off. Arend with another great run to go to the number three spot. Jeff Arend's incremental times: 60ft-0.926 sec., 330ft-2.368, 660ft-3.344/265.17 mph.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.107/307.02, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.177/300.66, Was #8
Right Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 7.802/67.75, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.197/300.80, Was #9

Gray started to lose traction early and then the chutes deployed (not sure if he banged to the blower)...Capps launched hard and has the quickest 60-foot time of the session and the parlays that into the number one spot. Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.896 sec., 330ft-2.324, 660ft-3.310/262.28 mph.

Left Lane: Courtney Force Runs 5.443/122.26, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.150/306.53, Was #6
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.103/305.29, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.133/306.19, Was #3

Force starts to smoke the tires and then her chutes are out early. Pedregon with a great pass as he goes to the number one spot with a picture perfect pass. On the top end interview Pedregon explained how after the reverser lever came off, but his crew got it into to reverse and then back to the starting line. Cruz Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.914 sec., 330ft-2.324, 660ft-3.302/262.23 mph.

Left Lane: Todd Simpson Runs 4.834/229.66, Now #13; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 5.403/148.82, Now #14; No Prior Run

Weather conditions: air temperature 84 degrees, relative humidity 61 percent, barometer 29.91 inches, adjusted altitude 2,557 feet, track temperature 120 degrees.

Haddock was up in smoke early and pedaled it, but couldn't get it to hook up before he lifted. Simpson clicks it off early.

Left Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 4.183/303.91, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.230/302.62, Was #11
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.269/285.47, Now #13; No Prior Run

DeJoria launched hard and keep it hooked up...Alexis DeJoria's incremental times: 60ft-0.928 sec., 330ft-2.383, 660ft-3.378/260.06 mph. Pedregon get a number on the board and into the show. Tony Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.922 sec., 330ft-2.387, 660ft-3.421/249.16 mph.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 5.133/166.17, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.197/300.80, Was #10
Right Lane: Courtney Force Runs 5.065/149.95, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.150/306.53, Was #6

Force started to smoke the tires and got real loose before she clicked it off...Gray lost traction early and clicked it off.

Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.490/258.86, Now #14; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Todd Lesenko Runs 6.704/98.07, Now #17; No Prior Run

Lesenko was up in smoke early and clicks it off...Densham was straight down the groove, but slowed on the top end. Gary Densham's incremental times: 60ft-0.969 sec., 330ft-2.470, 660ft-3.551/228.34 mph.

Left Lane: Mike Neff Runs 6.280/105.56, Now #18; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 5.073/161.92, Now #16; No Prior Run

Neff is up in smoke around 200 feet and the car is completely sideways before he lifts. He will be down to one last chance to get in the show. Beckman was up in smoke early and pedaled it to get in the show on the bump. Jack Beckman's incremental times: 60ft-0.902 sec., 330ft-2.412, 660ft-3.716/184.60 mph.

Left Lane: Bob Bode Runs 4.252/293.86, Now #13; No Prior Run
Right Lane: John Force Runs 7.076/87.76, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.212/296.05, Was #11

Force starts to lose traction early and clicks it off. Bode launched hard and keep it hooked up to go to the number 13 spot and that will bump out Beckman. Bob Bode's incremental times: 60ft-0.922 sec., 330ft-2.393, 660ft-3.420/251.67 mph.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.211/302.96, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.247/291.45, Was #12
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.140/309.56, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.153/256.65, Was #7

A couple real nice passes here as Hight runs his quickest pass of the weekend and the quickest pass of the round. Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.913 sec., 330ft-2.357, 660ft-3.346/262.79 mph. Hagan with his quickest pass of the weekend and the third quickest pass of the round. Matt Hagan's incremental times: 60ft-0.911 sec., 330ft-2.372, 660ft-3.398/253.99 mph.

Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 6.975/99.91, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.165/297.61, Was #8
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.261/291.89, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.139/300.00, Was #5

Head starts to haze the tires and clicks it off...Wilkerson is straight down the groove with a good clean pass. Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.955 sec., 330ft-2.423, 660ft-3.432/255.05 mph. The fifth quickest pass of the session.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.284/246.98, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.123/308.50, Was #3
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.203/301.00, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.138/307.37, Was #4

Tasca was dropping cylinders on the top end and got real close to the wall, actually grazing the wall past the finish line, so his run will count. Arend with another great pass, straight down the groove with the third quickest pass of the round. Jeff Arend's incremental times: 60ft-0.933 sec., 330ft-2.381, 660ft-3.387/258.62 mph.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.537/195.82, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.103/305.29, Was #1
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.166/303.16, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.107/307.02, Was #2

Pedregon was on a good pass until on the top end when it started hazing the tires. Capps launched hard and keep it hooked up with the second quickest pass of the round. Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.912 sec., 330ft-2.355, 660ft-3.357/257.63 mph.
