Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Michael L Jex

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 42nd annual Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: John Smith Runs 4.152/299.20, Now #1
Right Lane: Brian Thiel Runs 4.203/295.59, Now #2

12:56 p.m. The stands are packed, it's warm and sunny, track temp is 94 degrees, it's the first taste of nitro this weekend, here in Gainesville.

Smith ran a new career best to start things off. John Smith's incremental times: 60ft-0.920 sec., 330ft-2.353, 660ft-3.343/260.36 mph.

Left Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 6.152/121.78, Now #4
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 5.354/136.48, Now #3

Both drivers lost traction and lifted just past the 330-foot cones.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.246/291.51, Now #3
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 34.920/34.10, Now #6

Tasca's Ford spit flames out both sets of pipes on the burnout - perhaps the fuel setting wasn't quite right for the burnout??? Tasca pedaled once trying to save the burnout, then lifted. His Motorcraft entry backed up OK, so we're ready to go.

Tasca's car made a tiny hop up on the big Goodyears, then moved slowly about 10 feet, then coasted the rest of the way. The car came to a stop just past the finish line.

Left Lane: Bob Bode Runs 4.184/278.35, Now #2
Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 4.237/272.45, Now #4

Bob Frey described the flames out of both entries as "Wacky Flame" - both cars had "wacky" flames coming out the pipes at the top end - Lee on the right bank, Bode on the left.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.051/308.71, Now #1
Right Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.079/309.34, Now #2

To great baseline runs for Gray and Beckman, both cars went right down the middle of the groove.

Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.127/303.78, Now #3
Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.244/297.42, Now #8

Head's .921 60-foot time is the slowest short time so far this session, Arend's .898 is one of the quickest to 60-feet so far this session.

Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.168/305.15, Now #5
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.327/210.73, Now #11

Cruz was on a great lap till his Snap-On machine made a very big wiggle at the top end of the track. Force shot past Pedregon at that point to move into the top half of the field.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.359/213.03, Now #13
Right Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.164/293.98, Now #5

Neff ran four thousandths quicker than his boss, Capps lifted before the stripe, the reason not clear from here.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.096/290.51, Now #3
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.803/168.11, Now #15

Hagan makes it 1-2-3 for Team Schumacher - Beckman on top, then Johnny Gray, followed by Hagan. 1:24 p.m.

Round 2 Qualifying

Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Michael L Jex

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 42nd annual Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Paul Lee Runs 4.161/305.29, Now #5; No Prior Run

4:04 p.m. The track temp has cooled a little, it's now 99 degrees. Lee's run was straight as a string, he moves into the top 12 with his first 300 mph pass of the 2011 season.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.114/310.48, Now #4; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 5.827/137.57, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.152/121.78, Was #16

Tasca's burnout was still a little "wacky" this time, just not quite as strange as his aborted attempt in round one.

The run was anything but wacky, right down broadway and into the top four. Troxel lost traction early, pedaled, then lifted when the big Goodyears did not hook back up.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 6.625/101.04, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.354/136.48, Was #16
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.163/300.46, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.359/213.03, Was #14

Wilkerson smokes the tires, Capps made his first full pull of the weekend.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.260/281.25, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.803/168.11, Was #15
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.324/243.55, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.246/291.51, Was #13

Hight and Tony were side by side the whole way - the fans here in Gainesville loved the show, both teams were hoping to do better...

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 6.062/120.36, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.327/210.73, Was #15
Right Lane: Bob Bode Runs 4.221/252.19, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.184/278.35, Was #10

Cruz lifted way early, Bode was off the nitro before the finish line.

Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.439/213.57, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.244/297.42, Was #12
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.119/310.48, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.168/305.15, Was #9

Head fought his way to the stripe, the motor started mixing things up at the top end and he had to lift. Nice pass for Force, right down the middle of the lane.

Left Lane: Brian Thiel Runs 4.184/288.27, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.203/295.59, Was #11
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 7.335/84.04, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.127/303.78, Was #6

Arend starting spinning the tires as the timers clicked in, he had to lift. Thiel got very close to the centerline, but managed to keep everything in his lane.

Left Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.074/311.05, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.164/293.98, Was #9
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.030/309.84, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.096/290.51, Was #3

Matt Hagan charged his Diehard Charger all the way to the top spot. Neff trailed by just a few ticks at the top end.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 8.377/78.09, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.079/309.34, Was #4
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.057/310.77, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.051/308.71, Was #2

Very quick, and really consistent, Beckman looks ready to go rounds on Sunday. Gray hazed the tires, then the motor started mixing things up until he lifted. 4:31 p.m.

Round 3 Qualifying

Sat, 12 Mar 2011, 01:22 PM

Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #3
By Michael L Jex

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 42nd annual Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 8.527/84.72, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.079/309.34, Was #4
Right Lane: John Smith Runs 8.123/84.74, Now #13; No Prior Run

Weather conditions: air temperature 68 degrees, relative humidity 23 percent, barometer 30.07 inches, adjusted altitude 777 feet, track temperature 108 degrees.

Blue smoke au pair here - both drivers were up in smoke right off the starting line.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.165/289.32, Now #10; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 5.133/142.97, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.127/303.78, Was #7

Arend lost traction as the timers locked things up in the drive train, Wilkerson had wacky flames out the pipes at the top end, but it didn't slow things down much.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.090/307.09, Now #5; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 4.257/287.05, Now #15; No Prior Run

Team Pedregon's team was very happy with this blast down the Lucas Oil lane.

Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.181/298.07, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.244/297.42, Was #14
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.686/186.69, Now #16; No Prior Run

Tony hazed the tires, Head's Solara was on a string all the way down track.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.167/306.40, Now #12; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Bob Bode Runs 4.217/299.66, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.184/278.35, Was #14

Hight moves into the field with a smooth pass, Bode slowed just a bit from yesterday.

Left Lane: Brian Thiel Runs 4.278/277.60, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.184/288.27, Was #14
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.158/292.90, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.163/300.46, Was #10

Thiel hazed the tires from the 600-foot mark till the stripe.

Left Lane: Paul Lee Runs 4.201/291.89, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.161/305.29, Was #10
Right Lane: John Force Runs 5.840/119.22, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.119/310.48, Was #7

Force has raced here at the Gators for 32 years, his first race was 1979, where he DNQ'd...

John lit up the big Goodyears then spit flames out both sets of pipes in flash-bang fashion, then coasted the rest of the way.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.159/307.79, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.114/310.48, Was #6
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.134/303.78, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.051/308.71, Was #2

Both cars were side-by-side, smooth and straight till the stripe, the excitement started past the finish line when Beckman had only one chute come out, and it failed to blossom. Luckily there is a very long shutdown area here at Gainesville and Beckman was able to get things slowed down to make the final turn right in front of the sand trap, trailing a little blue wad of cloth that used to be a parachute behind him.

Left Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.086/309.49, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.074/311.05, Was #3
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.233/254.95, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.030/309.84, Was #1

Neff runs low ET of the round, Hagan hazed the tires the last 150-feet or so at the top end of the track. 1:17 p.m.

Round 4 Qualifying

Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By Michael L Jex

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 42nd annual Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: John Smith Runs 4.568/195.48, Now #17; Best prior run: 8.123/84.74, Was #18
Right Lane: Brian Thiel Runs 5.336/145.41, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.184/288.27, Was #14

4:10 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 77 degrees, relative humidity 20 percent, barometer 29.99 inches, adjusted altitude 1,464 feet, track temperature 109 degrees.

Smith drove over to the right, then the left, then got very close to the wall. He wisely called it a weekend. Thiel had problems of his own in the other lane.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.149/302.69, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.686/186.69, Was #18
Right Lane: Jim Head No Time, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.181/298.07, Was #13

Pedregon bumps out Troxel - Head's team fired the engine, then they had to shut him off with oil on the track surface. That cost him 1,000 dollars and five valuable points. As Head started the tow back to the pit area, Tony went right down the middle of the groove, and just missed getting into the top half of the field.

Left Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 4.256/299.80, Now #17; Best prior run: 4.257/287.05, Was #17
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.133/309.20, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.167/306.40, Was #13

Ouch! Troxel needed to run 4.18 or better, so her weekend is done. Nice pass for Hight, his best of the weekend.

Left Lane: Bob Bode Runs 4.511/239.36, Now #16; Best prior run: 4.184/278.35, Was #16
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.131/304.05, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.165/289.32, Was #13

Wilkerson's motor starting flashing some piston burning flames out the pipes just before the stripe, but it didn't keep him from moving up four spots. Bode improves, but not enough to avoid facing the number one qualifier tomorrow. Currently that will be Matt Hagan, but we've got more action to go yet in this final round of qualifying.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.164/301.07, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.158/292.90, Was #12
Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 7.415/92.18, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.161/305.29, Was #13

Lee's bid ended early, Capps ran faster, but slower in ET, something the team will work on before eliminations tomorrow.

Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.211/302.08, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.127/303.78, Was #8
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 5.787/117.88, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.114/310.48, Was #6

Tasca started to spin the tires just past the 330-foot timer cones and lifted off the loud pedal. Arend danced around at the top end.

Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.660/177.30, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.119/310.48, Was #7
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.100/309.06, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.090/307.09, Was #5

Force clicked at past half track when he lost traction, Cruz danced to low ET of the round (so far).Cruz Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.904 sec., 330ft-2.323, 660ft-3.305/261.47 mph.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.101/310.70, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.051/308.71, Was #2
Right Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 6.457/98.41, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.079/309.34, Was #4

Beckman almost matched Cruz Pedregon's time for low ET of this round, he missed it by just one thousandth of a second. Gray lost traction early and lifted.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.125/298.80, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.030/309.84, Was #1
Right Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.088/307.23, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.074/311.05, Was #3

In what could be something tomorrow Neff runs low ET of the round, and the fans enjoyed a great side-by-side blast by both drivers to end Pro qualifying here at Gainesville. Hagan will race Bob Bode in round one, and Neff will face Jim Head. 4:51 p.m.
