1966 fury III 383

Hey y'all my name is Brett. I recently bought a 66 fury with 383 big block. I have but some miles on to make sure what I have was solid and I am now looking to start in on building the motor. My goal is to be as peppy as possible but still street able. If I had a magical HP number i was shooting for it would prob be 450hp on pump fuel. I am in no huge rush and want to make sure I do it right the first time.

What intake manifold carb cam combo do y'all suggest?

Cam?

Headers? Any do's or dont's do y'all have for me. Thanks in advance.

a major mistake a lot of people make is using a camshaft and carb that is to big. think very hard about how the car will be used. a big cam and carb will make it more fun to drive. but less fun at the pump.

Welcome!

I just read an article about a car running nines the other day with a 450 cfm carb. The masses seem to think that slapping on an 1150 Dominator and installing a lopey bumpstick will get them past the Chevy crowd.

It won’t.

Back in the day, the goal was about 1hp per cube, so with your 383 biggie, a goal of 400hp is not only reasonable but pretty easy to do, especially these days.

The major power comes with head work. Port 'em, polish 'em, get the big valves. There’s at least 70 unlocked horses, right there, maybe more.

For your street 383, I’d go with a milder cam (maybe something like the comp cams 268), probably a 600 or 650 cfm carb, an electric fan, and some quality head work. You’d be surprised at the numbers that combo will make.

think about this. most of the time when driving on the street 90% of the time you are WELL below the max HP. my 01 dak V6 3.9 has max HP RPM is 5200. i find that if i short shift at 4000 it still has enough power. i would trade some top power for some more from a dead stop, even though i have a 4.1 gear. but i ONLY drive in town.
