2016 Jeep Cherokee Fuel level indicator
2016 Jeep Cherokee Fuel level indicator
hello, I recently began experiencing an issue with the fuel level indicator on my V6 Cherokee latitude. The original issue was that my fuel level indicator on my dashboard showed that I had zero gas with a low fuel light on even after filling up the tank.
Last weekend, I replaced the fuel pump by accessing the panel under the rear passenger seat. When I removed the old fuel pump, it was in several pieces with springs and metal rods loose in the tank. After removing the old fuel pump and the loose debris in the tank, I replaced it with a Delphi brand fuel pump from rock auto. This fuel pump came with a float arm, but it was detached from the pump. I attached the new float arm, and install installed the new fuel pump, however, I believe the float arm isn’t dangling from the pump properly.
After replacing, I closed everything up and started my car and saw that the fuel level indicator was reading at about a quarter tank. I assumed that it was working again since it wasn’t reading zero gas anymore. however, after filling my tank, my fuel level indicator stays, stuck at a quarter tank now.
I did some further research and found that there is a fuel unit located underneath the drivers side rear seat. I never replaced the fuel sending unit, and all research that I’ve done claims that the fuel sending unit is responsible for reading the fuel level. However, if that’s the case then why did my pump come with a float arm? Do they work in tandem, and do i I likely need to just fix the float arm on the fuel pump? Or should I also replace the fuel sending unit?
One final piece of information that may help diagnose my specific issue is that prior to replacing my fuel pump there were no error codes on my car, just a low gas light. However, after replacing my fuel pump, I now have a CEL for P-0461 “fuel level sensor a circuit range/performance.
Thanks in advance

Can't say I know for sure but if I were to take a guess from the info you gave, I would say the float might be a cut off switch to prevent the fuel pump from running dry. Can destroy a pump quick if it is allowed to run dry. If the fuel sending unit does not have it's own float then I would say it works in conjunction with the sending unit for fuel level.
