yes they are all very similar. The only differences are the length of the tailhouse, some shifter mountings and the differences in the hemi trans compared to the others.
Early units used a ball and trunion instead of a U joint and sliding yoke . Then of course the aluminum overdrive unit, obviously made from aluminum (the case). Other minor differences did occur from year to year, some were internal, but generally speaking, they swap around fairly easy.

Thought that there was also something about a spline count that mattered for HP use? Once again, no expert, but I read alot.

the difference is internal - they made actual 3rd gear od and fourth is still 1:1. the shift lever on the tranny is switched to make it all work as 3rd 1:1 and 4th od. even the hurst for the regular a833 will work on the od unit
23(i think) spline for small block and /6
18 spline for big block and hemi

yes it is 23 spline for the 6's and the smallblock and some of bigblocks too.
the 18 spline was used for HP use like the hemi and the 440 six pack.
the 23 spline is way more common than the 18 spline but is still very strong.
although the 18 spline is stronger. Look these guys up. www.passonperformance.com Very smart people when it comes to the 833's.
