440 Mopar intake manifold

I bought a 68 Chrysler Newport with the engine apart. The intake manifold bolts up no matter which direction it's facing. Does it matter which direction it's facing? Does the numbers face the front or the rear, or does it even matter?

j -

That's actually an interesting question on the port and bolt geometry (been using after-market intakes so long almost forgot what the factory ones looked like - d'oh.). However, there should be bosses to mount the coil and a recess for the carb/choke thermostat, They should be forward and on the passenger side, respectively.

Man this was such a hassle getting the bolts lined up and I have it backwards. You think it would be a big deal to leave it like that?

I think the Choke housing is going to be in the way of the carb linkage....
So no... I don't think you can leave the cast iron Manifold that way....
The chock coil hole should be on the passenger side. Also the vacuum port should be in the rear to hook to the power booster if so equipped.... Sorry...

If its on backwards, would you end up with 3 reverse gears and 1 forward gear?

Some of those had the coil mount which would of course be "to front." Also some tilted the carb to level the carb. When I was in the Navy in 68 a "rich kid's" father bought him an Orange Peel 69 383 Road Runner. he bought a Weiand dual quad manifold and showed up on night, complaining "no place to mount the coil." This was before I'd ever owned a Mopar, but I pointed out that the "coil mount" was now at the rear of the manifold!!! LOL

This was at Treasure Island, CA
