BROKEN TOOTH

I AM A NEW MEMBER. GOT A 72 DUSTER, 225/6. WENT TO REPLACE THE TIMING CHAIN, AND I HAVE A BROKEN TOOTH ON THE CRANK GEAR. CAN ANYONE GIVE ME ANY IDEAS HOW TO GET THE CRANK GEAR OFF, WITH THE ENGINE STILL IN, SO I CAN GET MY BABY BACK ON THE ROAD? ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

You'll need to borrow or rent a gear puller, these are simple tools which are used to remove the timing gear on the crank. You can easily get the gear off without having to remove the engine, but you will have to remove the crank pulley, harmonic balancer, and timing cover. I've never had a slant-6 powered car before, but the water pump may also have to be removed. The job is straightforward enough, just make sure to keep track of the hardware when take it off.

GOT ANY IDEAS ON HOW TO INSTALL THE NEW CRANK TIMING GEAR? KNOWING THAT I WILL REMOVE IT WITH A GEAR PULLER (EASY ENOUGH), I WAS THINKING OF INSTALLING IT WITH A HAMMER AND A BRASS PIN. NEVER HAD TO DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS WITH THE MOTOE STILL IN THE CAR. I AM OPEN TO IDEAS.

I'd prefer to use a "press" type tool if it requires anything more than gentle taps.
