flexplates
440 source lists two flexplates for a 1974 440. Can these affect the balance of a motor? Mopar are precision machines. I should have took the car to a shop, but I enjoy working on it myself. I'd like to find out if I got a steel or cast crank without pulling the engine. A couple people suggested using a magnet; I know they stick to an iron skillet.
I think you can tell by the harmonic balancer. Other than that it's the torque converter that will tell ya for sure. Cast crank has the welded weights to externally balance. Maybe someone else knows a better method.
everytime I've built a motor (Mopar or AMC), the engine shop always asked for the flex plate when they were ready to ballance the rotating assembly. I would think that it may have an effect on the motor if it is not the right one and not balanced properly.
