Garage port and polish

So im looking at porting and polishing my heads for my 383 at home. The engine is basically stock other than carb and intake. would this be a worth while project.

If I do decide to take this on do I need to deck the block or anything before I put it all back together?

Tips?

Thanks,

Gary

I would say Don't grind on them...... Just a casting clean up, port matching, decking would be ok, and a good valve job, will help things work nicely...
Just my 2 cents, for what you have to work with!!!!

A 3 angle grind, blend in the bowls and a rough smoothing is all that's needed. Polishing won't do anything for you. A good time to look at cutting down guides for valve lift and positive lock seals aren't too much money.

I usually take the head to my machinist to clean and crack check, then take them home to do the handwork, bring them back for the final grind.

the reason i said that is when i DID buy that porting set it was called Direct Connection. and i am truly dated. i talked to Ronnie Sox standing next to the then new 1968 Hemi Cuda. and i was at the first NHRA nationals in great bend Kansas 1955. that is NOT a misprint.

hey guys thanks for the suggestions but my biggest concern has not been addressed and I can no find an answer anywhere. If I pull my heads even just to clean them up maybe get a valve job done and then put things back together am I going to need to deck the block or should I be able to just get the old factory gasket off and put a new one on and bolt things up.......

No you dont have to deck the block..Just make sure it is clean... The reason people deck the block is to increase compression... And if you take to much off the heads to gain compression then you will have to have the block milled front and rear,,,where the intake mounts to allow for proper fit of the intake and allow the bolts to fit properly...Bill

Out of flat tolerance allowable:

Chrysler .00075" X length. (which is alot)

Usual for V8 .004" across length.

great site from 500. my 1967 coronet factory service manual, does NOT list cyl head flatness. for ANY engine. the general info on the site 500 gave should be more than good.
