Oil Leak Problem

Ok, me and my dad did a rebuild on our 440 motor. After we got it working, we noticed a leak on the rear block seal. I'm not sure what it is called, but it isn't the rear main seal, its behind it. The rear block seal?

Anyway, even my local speed shop was worried about this. The new seals aren't as good as the original ones. The original one is a fabric that covers the whole opening.

Does anyone know where to find this seal?

Can the oil pan be taken off of my 67 GTX 440 without taking the engine out of the car?

I'm not sure if the job can be done in the car, but the part that you are looking for is called a rear main seal. Felpro and Mr Gasket makes some good ones that I have used on the jeep 4.2L

You are talking about the piece that holds the crank in on the back end of he block.

78 is right about the seals, I got a set from Mr Gasket, haven't used it yet, but it looks to be real good.

when installing a rear main seal you need to take extra caution that you do not cut the gasket at all, even if its a sliver. The smallest piece that gets cut off when installing it will cuase it to leak, believe me. I've been there and done my share or cursing.

Not the rear main seal
there is another seal behind the one that holds the crank in place

The rear main seal is it to my knowledge. When I built my 383 BB that was the farthest back seal there was. Can you take a pic of what you are talking about?

The only other one besides that is the one behind the cam.

Perhaps a picture would help.
