1974 Dodge Charger 440 Engine

So the main reason I signed up for this forum was to see if anyone on her had some pretty good build ideas for the 440 that came in the 1974 Dodge Chargers. I'm currently in school for Automotive Technologies and when we get to go to the shop we are allowed to bring our own toys to work on so I would like to go ahead and figure out exactly what I should do with it before we get to that stage. I'm trying to make it a beast that I can run on the drag strip but also be something I can drive around every so often and not go completely broke. I still have a lot to learn about automotive's and building wise so I hope some of you can give me some pretty good places to start thinking about. Thank you for your time.

the more cam and carb you put in makes it less derivable on the street and suck more fuel. in most clubs you get more respect with well done stock machine. talk to the old timers for the best help. and hit some swap meets. all so if you find something for the right price it might be good to get it. you can trade it latter, for what you need.

I have sorta the same rig, a 1974 Charger SE, but the 440 is from 1969. The 74 440's were lower compression "smog" engines, and that has to factor into your build. Since you have the school to work in that will save you a lot of bucks in machine work and labor. Look at the link Bob gave you and decide on exactly what you want to do with the car and how many parts you want to replace. Depending on how far you go with the engine, you may (will) have to upgrade the trans, rear and suspension as well.

BTW - posting pictures would be nice ...

YOU need to make a decision! DO you want a race car or a street car ? Start with a 3.55 gear. Trans shift kit, to wake it up.. Doing projects in school generally requires LOTS of time. If that is what you want I would suggest finding another engine to work on
