28-30 mpg

i got my new summit magazine yesterday and as i was flipping thru the pages i stopped and read the Q&A section. i couldnt help but chuckle a bit when a guy said i have a 1970 dodge challenger, the engine went bad so he asked how hard it would be to make it a 400 hp engine that got 28-30 mph! their reply was the 400 hp was easy. but the 28-30 mpg was very unrealistic. (30 mpg out of a 340 isnt hard if your going down a 6% grade.!)

My car has 451 hp runs 10.6 and gets 22mpgs. 364cu.in.

MY buddies car runs a 12.1 @ 114 and gets 26 mpgs in a 6 speed camaro. His car dynoed 334 hp I think.

I think mpg's all depend on the tranny setup and how wel lthe fuel management is. Its hard to get performance and mpgs with a carb.

These mpg claims are on the highway cruising at 65mph.

i agree with tranny and gears and tire size.. but the 78 mpg is kinda hard to swallow.

I wouldn't find the 78mpg hard to believe, but at the same time the car will cost ??? $500,000. It would take a looonnng time to pay of vs an old classic v8 that gets 15mpgs.

I had a 3.9L/NV4500/3.54 gears with a set of 255/65/16 tires and would get 24MPG in my dakota. Tranny gearing and tire size plays a huge factor. The truck I have now has 4.10 gears with 245/75/16 tires which equals out to poop for MPG. (235/85/16 and a detroit locker will help out though.)

I've been lucky. If it's all highway, I'll get about 28-30. City... wellll.. that's a different story. For some reason it seems it's tough to get more than about 15 mpg with it. Can't understand that at all, I really TRY not to shift above 3000 rpm or squeal the tires more than every other red light, but sometimes I slip up lol

I had a '71 'cuda 340 with a 727 auto and 3.91 gears. Mods were headers, Edelbrock Torker intake, and a Holley 600 carb. I got 28 mpg out of it on a cross-country drive. This was highway mileage, of course. For awhile I thought my gas gauge was broken because it wasn't going down as quickly as I thought it would, but it was fine, the car just loved the highway.

Coincidentally enough, my 2006 Pontiac GTO with a 6 speed manual trans got exactly the same highway mileage.

727 with 3.91 gears.... a girl i know has a 06 pontiac auto. dont think its a gto it looks like it with a v6 and she says she gets 20 at best. the best i got out of a small block was a 78 diplomat 727 with lock up converter. not sure what the gears were. 18 mpg on highway. every week for to months i did the math not guess....im not saying you were guessing.
i have a freind that said his 06 f 150 got 20. and i asked him how he came up with that figure he said he guessed it lol.. i told him how to calc it out and he only got 15 mpg.

I'd have to say your math is off, I would think 15 is more likely what you got.
