I'm not intimately familiar with the old New Yorkers, but the older transmissions had the wierd old U joint on the rear of the trans, and I cannot for the life of me remember what they are called. Not desirable

Furthermore, the early models had the tapered rear axles, which aside from being weaker, and more difficult to get parts for, require a huge big puller to remove the rear hubs.

I'd buy the '68 if it were me

They certainly did, but not for very long. I can't enumerate the years, but where do you guys thing those HUGE "long ram" manifolds originated?

While the all-out 413's were pretty torquey, those manifolds were not known for "top end"

However, they were pretty much the ancestor of the famous 426 max wedge:
