i might buy a 68 monaco with a 383, or a 62 new yorker with a 413, I know they are about the same thing but is one better with stronger parts??
is the compression the same?? both are 4 barrel motors, and are the 727s the same or are the older like 62 models stronger?

 

i should have mentioned i am going to buy one of them for motor tranny setup to go into my 68 coronet i have newer 727s but was wondering 413 or 383 wich one is stronger if any

I never knew that a 413 engine was ever used in a car. What years and models used this engine? I thought it was only used in trucks.I would be interested in learning more.

 

they used them in the c bodies of the sixty's not sure bout the late fifty's but i do now they were in the sixty's the new yorker, and the imperial both had these for a while those are two cars that came to mind for me there are others but can't think of any right of the bat. Anybody else knows of any other ones?

 

go with the 383. parts for the 413 are hard to come by and very expensive compared to the 383. the 413 was used in c-bodies from 1959 through 1965, when they were replace by the 440. the transmission in the 62 is also much more difficult to work with on a swap.

 

Parts for a 413 aren't scarce up here ! ...and the normal cast pistons give a better compression ratio than the 383.

 

The 413 was used in cars; '65 was the last year. Listen to the old Beach Boys Song, "Shut Down." It's about a super stock dart with a 413 racing a 'Vette.

 

I was always told by older MoPar guys that the 413 is a longer stroke engine than the 383 so consider that for what you are installing. Are you looking for long term power or for quicker acceleration?

Given the weight of your body and its use, maybe the 383 might be better. If you were doing a truck, I'd say go with the 413 and a 727B with a Dana 60 rear axle. But that's my 2 cents, I'm a diesel guy

 

Go with the 383 parts new and used are much more readily available. Also, the 383's came stock with steel cranks but I'm not sure about the 413's.

The 383 would probably bring up the value of your care substantially but if you are looking for a rock solid block to punch out up to .080 look for a newer 400. Some came with steel cranks but most with a really beefy forged crank externally balanced.

So for value and tradition a 383 or for power and torque a 400. I have and still run both by the way!

 

the 413 has a steel crank. if u r going for street use go 383 or 400 all the way.

 

The 413 is a MAX WEDGE engine it is the predisesor of the 426 HEMI. Its a hard core engine with tonnes of torque and can be punched to 426 if you want !! If you like gettting scared .......throw in the 413 you will love it !!
