440-6 vs. 426 hemi
Hello everyone. I'm icemancometh, I'm 19 years old, and I've been addicted to MOPAR for about 6 months now. My favorite machine from the muscle car era is the '69 1/2 Road Runner 440-6 4 speed. I've been reading about that car (and MOPAR in general) quite a bit recently. Everywhere I look, they all say the same thing: the 440-6 was wicked fast but the hemi was faster. Now I recently came across 1/4 mile times that were recorded back in the day by car magazines for the '69 1/2 Road Runner 440-6 4 speed. Drag Racing magazine recorded 12.98 @ 111.6 and Super Stock magazine recorded 12.91 @ 111.8. Now, the fastest 1/4 mile times I've ever found for the hemi 'Cuda were 13.1 @ 107.12 and 13.41 @ 104.6. I just thought that was kind of interesting. Any thoughts?

There are tremendous variables.
First, some of the test cars had the crap run out of them, and may not have been in top shape, and tires back then left a lot to be desired, as well as the usual variables---
driver skill, track conditions, weather, temp, humidity, and a host of other things.
But here's the kicker---
When I had my '70 RR, and was stationed at Miramar (San Diego) long about '71 or '72--I remember reading a small little panel, buried in the back of one of the "popular" car rags, in which they said:
"We lie"
"We test these cars, and sometimes we think they should have "done better" so we "factor the times."
