906 heads on a 400?

906 heads on a 400?

I have a 1976 400 big block and I have been trying to get some power out of it.I have got some goodies bought for it,but then a set of 906 heads fell into my lap for free,free is me so I grabed them and said thank you.however I am getting conflicting opinions on weather or not they will work on a B block 400.Does anybody know?

yes they will work, big block is big block in this case but if you want power out of this motor your best bet is to port and polish add a cam will wake it up just swapping heads won't make a difference

I have accumulated a 750cfm edelbrock carb,Torker manifold,hp cam,hp pushrods,hp lifters,flat top pistons,and was looking for an extra set of heads to like you said port and polish.I am trying to get all of the parts together so I can tear it down,get the block machined and slap it back together fast.If the 906 heads were not compatible it would screw me on having them built.Thanks for the help!

The cam lifters,and pushrods are Elgin hp stage two match set.Now that I know the 906 heads will work its time to save pennys and get valves/springs,rollerrockers and some machine work. Any suggestions?Oh yea my buddy used a set of calmini or calimini or somthing like that pushrods,bent a pushrod first pass down the track and ruined alot of work.FYI

Brian, I am not familiar with Elgin cams,what is the duration,lift? Don't put too much money in to the 906 heads,just put in harden seats,valve job. After market aluminum heads are the way to go.just my .02 worth.

intake-.420-204/270 ehaust.443-214/280.This engine is in a 76 dodge powerwagon that I tow my jeeps tailor with.I am looking for a truck that will do that job with better gas mileage,mopar of course.At that point the engine will come out of the truck for the build,then find its way into a jeep probably.My jeeps have been known to wind up under water and I dont think a set of aluminum heads bolted to a cast iron block would be such a good idea considering expansion and contraction differences between the two metals.Any experience with that?

the reason I was particularly interested in the 906 head is I wondered if they would raise the compression?

906 heads on 400 OK.

906 heads are fine to use on 400's. The only heads you cant use are Hemi and max wedge. Your compression wont go up much if at all because the combustion chamber is open but you are going to gain big time flow. The flow rate of slightly modified 906 heads are 85-90% of what the max wedge heads would do and a million times better than the mid 70's smogger garbage. They may not have high compression chambers but what they lack in compression they make up for and then some with less restricted intake flow into the chamber and cleaner combustion. 906 heads are a good choice for any B/RB engine performance or otherwise. They will make a big difference on their own even without port matching or polishing.

Brian, 2x on what 73barracuda said. Also, that cam is good for a truck.you want to make a lot of low end torque to move that powerwagon. I think that Torker manifold might cost you low end power,the performer would be better imo. Aluminum heads work fine with the head gaskets available today again,imo.

p.s. If you want snow I have plenty to give!
