Yes, there is a tremendously long thread about it, before the hot rod article.{thats where they got the idea I think} It was originated on a mopar forum. The guy that started it {actually he was responding to a question} was from Canada and used Tremclad paint, Canada's version of Rustoleum. He painted several cars with it including a '69[?] charger. Looked good too. Can't remember if it was this forum {oldtimers kickin' in}. Anybody know where to find it? I'd like to know if it's still going or if there have been any new discoveries with the process. I stayed up till 4 in the morning one night reading it.

John posted up the atricle a little while back. It's a good read and would be great for the person that has time and not a lot of money.

Don't do it! I have painted and prepped for paint a lot of cars. Do all the prep yourself (you gotta do it anyway) and let Maaco paint the car. About $200 bucks and you'll get a much better job. People that bash the Maaco paint job don't understand its all about the prep. The guy painting cars for a living, paints maybe as many as 15 a day! he obviously gets good at it. This is not a plug for Maaco but they paint cars cheaper than anyone else can, and if you do it right, you can't even buy the materials for $200. Don't put some **** paint on the car to only get disgusted and have to strip it all off or make more work for someone else. Do it right the first time.

Wash the car real good with dish deterg. your original paint can be used as a good base for paint job if its decent so if its ok just leave it.
Yeah if you've got some surface rust in spots that your worried about sand them down with 80 grit followed by 120 grit and shoot the area with some primer. To prevent futher rusting, put a light coat of cheap spray enamel over the primer so it will be sealed.{you will be sanding it off when you prep for the whole paint job}. Maaco is a good deal though but youve got to do some of the prep work if you want it to look nice. Do things like dent repair, and removal of all trim {Bumpers door handles etc} and or course rust repair.Maybe some sanding and prime and sand in spots. I recommend a book called "how to paint your car on a budget" by Pat Ganahl. You can get a lot of ideas in the book, you have options as far as the different routes you can take.

A white primer will help to hide the blue.

Crazy is right about the prep work though. If the car is prepped right, anyone could paint it and as long as they know what they are doing, it'll look good.

well i started the paint process today. Me and my brother got it all sanded down and layed down the first coat. Tomorrow we will be wet sanding then put on coat 2. This took all day today, its ALOT of work, especially removing all the chrome trim it has. Heres some pics of it now.

yeah im using rustoleum gloss white. I sure hope this good weather holds up for atleast a week so i can finish. all the supplies actually did cost $98 like hotrod mag said. Does anyone know how to take off the middle chrome pieces on the doors of the car because i could figure out how to so i just taped them off but i would like to remove them for a better coverage.

my engine is looking pretty ugly. I cant take out the whole engine and paint it so i was wondering is there a way to make my engine look better or paint it without taking it out? Im tired of the rust/peeling orange look of my engine. I would like to redo it in orange but without taking the motor out.

They should pop off {they're kinda snapped on plastic nubs that are riveted to the body} you gotta have the right touch with the removal though. My bud has a body shop and he just somehow magically pops them off with a flat blade screwdriver with a little masking tape wrapped around it. I've never had any luck at it, i always end up bending the trim. Anybody know the "trick". [Its possible there may be one or two screws].

Easy off oven cleaner, toilet brush, then spray with garden hose attached to the water heater. Then i just removed the valve covers, scuffed them with a scrunchy pad. primed and painted. Wrap the carb and dist. with aluminum foil{forms to it real easy} cleaned the intake best i could and spray painted the intake. Used cardboard to kinda mask the other stuff and touched up the gearbox and exhaust manifolds and master cylinder with barbeque grill paint. [semi gloss]

It's all about leverage with the trim, have you ever done demolition work on a house and removed the trim in the house, just like that, but the metal trim is easier to break. Go real slow and turn the screw driver as close to the mounts as possible but not too hard, the goal is to keep moving the screw driver closer to the mounts so it doesn't bend or break.

NO!!! Stop!!! the trim has clips that don't pop off!!! There are nuts inside the door (at least on the ends) be sure to remove any screwed type fasteners first. Good luck finding that if you f2345ck it up.
