Will a plate that fits over the carb hole on the intake manifold work for pulling a 440.

It worked for me. I even did it on an aluminum intake. I was concerned that the threads would pull out but it worked fine.

Just don't try removing the converter with the engine.. Disconnect it first..

tried a load equalizer bar

Tried a load equalizer bar that bolt to the four corners of the intake. Pulled two of the bolts out when I tried to raise the motor. The heads are aluminum. It is a 5 speed. so don't have a converter on it. I think the trans is not able to come up because the rear of it is pushed all the way to the floor on tail end to get drive line angles right.

i have pulled many early 331, 354, 392 hemis with a carb plate. no trouble. the 392 DOES weight 800-900 lbs. with a cast iron torqueflight its more like 1000-1100 lbs. the 392 heads are 45 lbs ea bare. the rocker Stantons are 30 each.

If it is real difficult you might remove the trans first and then the engine, The dowel pins in the block may be frozen ? Just double check that everything is disconnected...

block dowel pins ? yep my dad bought a 300 J that the first owner put a 500 in max engine. by using a 440 bare block from chrysler. but for got the dowel pins. the flex plate ripped apart as we drove it home. the first owner had that happen to him. he thought it was from the tons of power. SO dont for get that chrysler does NOT put the dowel pins in a factory bare block. so we had TONS of fun blowing away EVERY ford we came across on the street.
