i have painted engine bays before.
i would recommend a gravity fed cup gun set the air pressure low and the volume of primer and paint low, light coats there are many areas inside that bay for runs to appear. make sure its clean and oil free.

Use a media blaster it takes it to bare metal real quick. There's not alot of paint from the factory in the engie compartment. Then opoxy primer and then the color you want use a low pressure gravity feed gun. $20 at harbor frieght. If I did it with no runs then so can you it is a piece of cake

Few things.

First and foremost do not worry about anything. Factory the bays were badly painted. Second there is junk for paint, unless you have some enamel laying around, its gonna rust no matter what you do. Thanks to the greenpeace a$$holes we have nothing to paint a car with anymore.

You would have been better off leaving the original enamel paint and cleaning it as best as you could before using modern primers and paint on it.

low presser when i painted they didn't have High volume low presser guns they just started introducing them into the industry we used old school high presser but dialed it down at the gun with a valve i use one today, watch it fall from the gun like little rain drops, flows out real nice, very easy to use, it's very forgiving, too a point! use light coats i like starting at the high points and the sharp edges and work out . Don't be afraid to adjust your fan size... test it on the masking paper on the windshield keep your flow rate low so as to avoid runs and wipe the crap out of the finished primer with silicone tar remover, also at the suppler. make sure there is no silicone around or you will get "fish eyes" in your paint.
follow the directions... get yourself a ratio stir stick it has the ratio scale on it you can get it at the local body shop supplier, it will ratio out the color the reducer the hardener.
