Bell housings?

The Belvedere has a 1973 318 and 727 in it currently...I found a 440 core motor that I'm thinking about buying, but will the 440 bolt to my current 727 or are the bell housing on big block and small block different??? Thanks All, Mitch

the top 2 bell housing to engine bolt holes are
small block 7 3/4 " center to center
big block 6 7/16" center to center
I've got the book out now if i find anything else out I'll let yous know . but i have read that the big block box has tougher parts especially they pre 71 boxes . if it's not a big hp motor the 904 won't tax as much hp but on the same note the 727 will have no problems with a heavy right foot . every knows the 727 is a tuff box .

Thanks for the replies, I thought they were different but no one I knew could tell me for sure.
