best way to remove 440 engine from 68 charger?

Im removing the engine from my 68 charger. it was a 318 car that now has a 440 and auto trans in it. Is it easier to remove the engine by itself or pull the trans with it? It also has long tube headers. I plan to remove those before I pull the engine. Any advise would be appreciated since i am new to Mopars.

i think it is easier to pull the motor then drop then drop the trans and you have to rmove the headers to get it out

We've done it before but it kinda depends on how many folks you have helping you. We had a bunch (and one was a body guy...which comes in handy later, as you'll see).

We pulled the hood off. Pulled the motor/trans combo complete. Body guy helped put the hood on correctly after reinstall. It's a real pain to get the hood back on right if you don't know what you're doing, or haven't marked it before removal.

Just my two cents. I'm lazy and would buy the beer and grill if friends came to help me do it in one procedure.

Out the bottom. Four bolts on the K frame, two upper control arm bolts, and it is out. Wires, drive shaft, hoses everything else is the same top or bottom. Everything comes out one piece and it is easier to disassemble out from the car. I have done it every way and the bottom is the easiest.

use a wax pencil to mark where the hood lines up.

I welded up this Dolly to make moving it around easier but it can be done right on the floor.

Before i had a chance to see the responces, I removed the hood, headers, engine accesories and most the bell housing bolts.

After seeing the responces, I think I am going to try removing it from the bottom. I need to remove everything anyway to clean and paint.
Could I just use blocks to support the engine and tranny, then use floor jacks to lift the body once everything is unbolted?

My only issue is I need to be able to roll the car around in the shop since Im tight on space. Maybe I can rig up some kind of dolly for the front end? Thanks for the advise.

The same hoist you would use to lift the engine can be used to lift the body. We attached it with some tow strap material.
