car trouble

wile this is not a Chrysler product. maybe you can help. my x wife has this cheby 1989 wagon with a 2.8 v6. the problem it will start and run. i guess it does ok at low speeds, but when she tries to give it throttle to get up to highway speeds it cuts off dies and it will start back up on its own. sometimes it dies at an idle but always starts back up, well she disconnected the cat' no muffler no cat' and that made it run well she said so she or her b'friend put a pipe in place of the cat' (no emmisions where she lives) and it still does it. she said it has allot of velocity out the tail pipe, my thoughts were maybe the muffler was clogged too. never seen that happen but i guess it could. she said she changed the ecu. and most the sensors the mas and tps included, any ideas?

Yes, the muffler can come apart on the inside and it sounds like this is what happened. I've had this happen where the baffles inside the muffler came loose and sounded rattley. New muffler fixed it.

yeah i thought so too, but it doesn't feel obstructed, the velocity out the pipe feels fine.

and thanks for the quick reply.

Check for carbon tracks on the plugs? Could be a misfire.. Plugs, wires, coil ect.. Have seen some weird running issues w/ minor misfiring

the only reason I'm helping her is well my kids ride in that car and i don't want them stranded or rear ended from the car stalling on the highway.

Have you done a sweep-test of the TPS to make sure it doesn't have a short or open? Another possibility is that the crank or cam position sensor is no good.

PS: I have a '66 Sport Fury too!

kool what power plant?

yes the tps is fine,
i cant keep working on it, her brother is. which scares me because he couldn't get a torque converter in a tranny so he used a ten pound hammer to seat it in.

Your ex-BIL sounds like someone who should keep away from cars!

The Fury is a red convertible with a 383. I've had it for many years. Needs a total resto....someday. Other things always seem to come first.

well he took a ford aod and tried using parts from a c6 in it, told him there 2 different tranny's but he thought he could make it work.

he called me up one winter day and said " bob i have a question, why does my ac work in the winter and not in the summer?" i asked are you serious? he said "yes" i said go to your car he did, i said is it cold out "yes" that's why it works in the winter and not the summer, he said "no its colder than the outside air" i sad the fan is forcing it through the vents which makes it feel colder. he didn't believe me.

my fury need a resto too, it will start and run/drive. i gotta get it from where its at, i haven't seen it in a yr.
440,727. rear gears don't remember if i have 270 something or the 391 in it.
