D60/4:10 locker on the street??
Hey all, I have a question about the 71 duster that'll be parked in my driveway sometime next week. In case anyone missed my other thread, the car is a 1971 Duster with 25k original miles, originally a /6, now a 440 with a 4 speed trans from a Hemi application, 8 point cage, narrowed rear end, mini tubbed, ladder bars, full subframe connectors, D60 with 4:10s and a locker, etc.
The problem is, I've never driven a car with a locker on the street (or anywhere for that matter). How are the manners of a locker on the street? I've heard some horror stories. Will it be impossible to cruise in this thing with a dana 60 locker and 4:10s? I was told to switch to a posi unit and some 3:73s if I want to cruise, but curious to get some opinions of guys on here first. Some of you may think I'm being impatient, but I haven't driven the car yet and won't be able to for about a week. Thanks in advance for any advice/insight.

Well.... with a 4:10 locker, you won't be getting very far, very fast. you try going 60 mph, it'll be revving very high in 3rd gear...
3:73's are a decent set for cruising... but I'd go to 3:54's. But thats just my opinion...

Well, that doesn't sound very promising, but wouldn't I be doing 60 in 4th gear?? That was probably a typo. Thanks for the input, Nick. I appreciate the help.
Any other opinions on this? Could I just swap the locker out for a posi unit and then sell off the locker to make some of the money back?
Anybody out there with an enjoyable street car with a locker?

4.10 gears and a locker will sell on a local 4x4 forum easy (depending on the locker that you have). You may even be able to trade for 3.73 or 3.55 gears and a sure grip.
Drive it when you get it and see how you like it. There are different types of lockers out there and they all act different. Sure grip (aka posi) is easier on the vehicle and you for cruising though.

i street drove the mirada with a 4.56 and a locker...i also drove it on the street with a tight suregrip and a 4.88...THAT was too much. this is all with a 727.
i dont think that the mirada is that bad with the locker. it can be a little tough maneuvering around tight parking lots, but thats with a 456 and 4000 stall. when im moving, i dont notice it very much. the hardest thing is when im at the track, and i have to make a tight turn to get onto the trailer...
btw, nice sig!

Well, that gives me a little hope that this thing might have some street manners! I'm only reluctant to change out the rear because everything is pretty much brand new back there. I guess I'll just wait and make a decision based on how the car performs. I'd still love to hear from anyone else with experiences/opinion. Thanks guys!

im afraid ive mis-spoken a bit. i have a 4.56 with a spool, not a locker rear. the results should be similar, but the locker may have more give..im not sure.
i dont think that there is much use for the locker or spool unless you race a ton and are breaking rearends. i think that the spool reduces some of the drivetrain weight, but other than that my suregrip got just as good of traction.

A locker is designed to disengage when let off the gas and turning to allow the tires to turn freely. If you get on the gas while turning with a locker, You will either hear it "ratchet" or the tires will give and chirp.

Good info guys, thanks! I guess I'll wait and see how it reacts to street driving once I get a feel for the car. At least I know the thing will go in a straight line with the fat tires and ladder bars and a locker
P.S. I changed the sig-- hopefully nobody else has this one.

Haha, hey it's no problem at all. It was mildly confusing when we were both posting in the same thread keeping track of who was saying what, so I figured it was better to be unique. Hopefully that avatar will be replaced by a pic of my car in a few days when it's finally in my possession.

I was told it's a 440 out of a 1972 charger. It looks stock to me. I was disappointed when I saw those motors were only rated for around 280 horsepower. I won't know for sure until the car is in my possession.
In any case, a stroker kit is in this car's future for sure.
Here's a bad pic of the motor. Does that look stock to you guys? When I get the car I'm gonna post up casting numbers to see what I've got. Hopefully you guys can help me with that...

are we talking mini or full spool or locker .
i have a Detroit locker in my 8 3/4 its fine for street driving . mini spool or full spool or welded locker is another story . 4.11:1 is a bit much for hwy driving , but around town on weekends to the track & back no worries . if you don't drive into shopping center car parks I'd keep it .

Thanks for the info! That's what I wanted to hear, haha. The consensus seems to be pretty evenly divided on this subject. I guess it's a matter of taste and what each individual considers "street manners." At 23 I'm not overly concerned with smoothness of the ride and comfort, I'll sacrifice this thing hooking up and going in a straight line when I want it to for a bit of comfort. I'll keep you guys posted on everything and post pics when the time comes. Thanks again!

I have a limited slip differential in my scout that dosen't seem to limit that much slip any more. When I am in the pasture and step on it just one tire spins, and both are slick. Is there any way to sure it up? maybe I put the wrong type of gear oil in the rear end? any ideas? sorry to high jack the thread.

All limited slips need an aditive to help "activate" them.

I recently changed out my 3:91 suregrip (no locker) for a 3:55 suregrip for driveability on the freeway. I don't have a functioning tach, but with 3:91s, I can tell you that at freeway speed, I was looking for a 5th gear. I am guessing I was doing 3600rpm in 4th gear at around 70 miles per hour.

I had some similar questions about dropping a LSD with 4.11s in my charger with a 440/ 727 but im pretty sure im going to drop it in anyways... i usually just cruse around town with it and im hoping those steep gears will wake that big car up off the line. 4.11s are just a little scary with 3 gears and all...

D-60 / 4.10's
AND A DETROIT LOCKER! :-) on 33's
That is all hiding under that fancy green cover.
(73 Scout... with a few mods! and 318 powered so I can hang with the cool kids too!)
Aside... the gears are great offroad and starting up quick... but for long distance, top speed and highway (and GAS...) : THEY SUCK!!!!!
For general... I think 3.54 are ideal.
