Engine Shop Dilema

Guys,
I need the advice of my fellow mopar forumers...I had a local engine shop rebuild and install my 440. Basically a 318 to 440 conversion. They did a great job..With the project they recommended a guy for a re-built 727. I paid the tranny guy seperately and everything was going along smoothly.

Long story short the tranny is having trouble in Low 1 gear. It seems to be missing. All other gears including drive work fine. The engine shop needs the car out of their shop and informs me that I need to handle this with the tranny guy. I'm having trouble digesting this. I feel it is their responsibility to at least facilitate the process in having the tranny fixed.

btw the tranny guy is an hour away from my house. I would have to trailer the car (don't own a trailer) to him and probably leave it there. I don't really know this guy. All I know is he has one bay, no fax or cell phone or credit card machine.

HOw would you guys handle this? Oh Yeah This project was not cheap, and I'm supposed to make my last payment tomorrow.

Wow that sounds like quit the pickle. It sounds like your engine shop isn't standing behind the tranny guy they suggested and now they want your car out of their shop? I'd say cut your losses with that shop, look around for a different shop and spend your money with someone that will stand behind their word. I agree with you that this is the engine shops responsiblity, but you need to make them realize that it's your money that keeps their doors open, tell them that you'll never deal with them again if this matter isn't sorted out asap. Good luck man!

Kyle

What's the tranny guy got to say about this before you make your last payment ?
I assuming it's an automatic, is it just a linkage issue ?

Its an automatic. The tranny guy says he would make good on his product. I think the engine shop should at the very least split the cost of trailering the car out and back...Your thoughts?

WHY???Why should they pay anything? They had nothing to do with it. They made no money on the trans, you said you paid him directly. This is all on you, and possibly the trans guy.

Some trans shops have trailers! Ask the guy if he can help move your vehicle, since it is the trans that is the problem.

Was this guy recommended to you by the engine shop? Where did you come across this guy?

If you don't want to fuss with these people anymore, then locate a reputable transmission place to help you out.

At the risk of sounding like a jerk, have you checked the trans fluid level with the car warm, in neutral and parked on level ground? Maybe someone forgot to fill up the torque converter on install and you're just low on fluid? That's a free and easy check before you jump through alot more hoops.

I have to agree with Steve, Ya can't expect the engine shop to pick up any tab for the tranny guy. But as Morrigan said, get the tranny guy to fix it up. He must have travelled to fix the tranny in the first place. Tell him to come on down and make good. Buy him a beer.
And if they don't you can always burn the bast.. oops never mind.

The reason I feel its not totally on me is because its their tranny guy. They reccomended him to me and I just dealt with the finances seperately.

I'm a small business owner and I expect the same level of customer service from someone as I give. For some reason this isn't passing the smell test for me..

Anyway I think I'll just bite the bullet, pay the $300 for the flatbed and suck it up.

Thanks everyone for your input.

In all honesty, It's impossible for us to give advice if we don't know the whole story. I hope it all works out man, it's a sweet ride.

If they had paid the trans guy and you paid the shop then yes that is correct, but you dealt with the trans guy yourself. This is likely the reason they didn't want to get involved in the first place.

I do some contracting on the side, and no matter how hard you try, mistakes will always happen. It's how you handle your mistakes that makes the difference. I've had folks call and ********** me up and down, and after I let them wear themselves out, I work on a solution. The next day they are happy, alittle ashamed of themselves, and offering me a beer. Be firm, but be polite first. If you set the wrong tone off the bat, all you'll get is a big FU. All us professionals are embarrassed when we screw up. Maybe offer to split the cost of transport if he dont pony up at first. True, on principle, you shouldnt have to pay anything. sometimes ya gotta pick your battles. Do you want a guy with a chip on his shoulder fixing your trans?

They only recommended him... You made the decision to go with him... Did you ask for any customers to talk to???

But if he is willing to stand up and fix the problem. I say its on you to get it there.... JMO....
