First Car

What was your first car and tell any interesting stories that go along with it. I found my coronet on craigslist 2 years ago. I'd been Savin money and had 800 in the bank. The guy was asking 900 and I talked him down to 800. Trailered it home and when I drove the car off of he trailer and into my carport, it was like the scene in christine where arnie drives his new belvedere into his bay in the garage. My car would only run for a few seconds and it was cold so it looked like a smoke machine. Sounded really rough and looked really rough. Now you can see it's alive and back on the road ( check out clean car post.) took alot of money, sweat, times where I wanted to give up and even regretted buying the car because the school year was approaching fast and she wasn't nearly ready to be driven. I couldn't handle another year of he school bus. Finally got it going junior year and has never stopped since.

1982, 18 y.o. needed a car. Mom said a mechanic at work had a "chevelle-like" car for sale at work, wanted $300. There was a recession that rivaled this one at the time. You couldn't get a Mc-Job then cause adults were taking them to support their families. The economy catches a cold...Detroit gets pneumonia! So I say yes and the guy delivers the car to the house. It was a tad rusty and beat-up. turns out it wasnt a Chevelle. It was a well-abused Buick GS Skylark! 1970, 350, auto, console, 315HP-mega torque Buick motor! I did not know this that day, piece of **** was my opinion then. But I read books, asked questions, and learned all I could about it. By learning how to tune, I regularly beat a local guy with a 70 chevelle with the 454. I should not have won, but I did. Miss that car....

Mine was a 1976 Plymouth Valiant, 225 Slant Six, and a 904A tranny. It was a great car, spotless.

I had the car for about 6 months before a Michigan winter took it's toll. I slid off the road a bent the front left control arm. This car was equipped with a front swap bar and it was impossible to find a replacement control arm with the sway bar mount. So, I bought a stock one, cut the sway bar mount off the bent one and welded it to the replacement.

I then drove the car another 4 months, until the Oil light came on. I was sure the engine needed to be rebuilt, so I ripped it apart and rebuilt it. Turned out it was just the oil presure sending unit.

None the less, I was 16 and it was a great learning experience.

Mine was a 72 Mustang Sprint, 302/C4. Got it i 2006 when i was 17 and finally got it running a few months later. I still have it, she is a fun (but slow.) little car. Happy i learned to drive in that before i got my charger. Its really just a pile of bondo and fiberglass but i bought it myself, fixed it myself, blew it up myself, fixed it again myself, and learned almost everything i know about cars from her. Its gong to sit around until i finish school though my focus has switched to the charger (obviously.) Its faster, in better much shape, and worth more. 440 > 302. Still love the old rustang though.

Mine was my 1973 Plymouth Roadrunner May 2010; I was skeptical about buying it, not knowing if it was an original or a cloned Satellite, but I did my research, I was 17 approaching 18, the guy selling it wanted $4000 when I first saw it, I waited a month and he dropped it to $3000, so I jumped for it, put $1500 worth of parts, time, tools into it, now it runs like a champ, needs a minor tune-up and I'll have it on the road in no-time. Wanted to give up multiple times, but my friends were there for me, I remember spending day and night working on it and just avoiding problems all day.

My soon to be exwife and i rebuilt the motor and put her back together took dad for a ride scared the s--t out of him and said what do you think of this P.O.S. now never would ride with me again. Went into the air force during that time my dad sent his nemisis to the junk yard i came home to 40 bucks i've forgiven him for doing that, but to this day the grass has not grown back in that spot where she sat while i was gone.

Circa 1987-88, I was 17 years old looking for my first car. I found a '61 Chevy Corvair that had been sitting for a couple years. I went to look at it and it was all there, just a mess inside and very dirty. The car had a freshly rebuilt motor which fired up after it was installed, back fired and died. The owner said they couldn't get it started after that so they just let it sit. They were asking $50. My cousin (mechanic by trade) went to look at the car with me and he told me it has to be something stupid and to offer them $35. I offered $35 and they took it. We had the car towed home and had it running the next day. Whoever rebuilt the motor put the distributor in wrong and they had the plug wires in the wrong firing order. So I cleaned the car up and sold it for $300.

1981 Z28. I had been saving for a car with money I earned on a paper route that I had. My grandpa was always big into cars since way back in the 40's. Anyway he knew that I wanted a 2nd gen Camaro and had been looking quite a bit for one. A friend of his had this car sitting behind the barn and said he would sell it to me for $1000, and that he would hold it for me as he was in no hurry to sell it. The car needed some work but the body was in great shape. So I knew I would need extra money to get it going once I got it. I busted my butt doing my paper route and helping Grandpa with his carpentry work all summer long when I was 15. The weekend before I turned 16 that following September my Mom said that Grandpa had some work for me to do if I wanted the money, and drove me to his house. When we got there the Camaro was sitting in his driveway with "happy 16th Dave" written in show polish on the back window. He said that I had worked so hard for him all summer saving to get the car, and that I had done better work that most men he would have hired, that I could consider the car my bonus check. Plus I think he was pretty sure that I needed the money that I had saved to fix the rest of the car up. He helped me rebuild the top end, and it ran strong for a long time after that. It always had really weird things going wrong with it. Like one time while driving down the highway the harmonic balancer just fell off. My Mom swore that I was racing it but I was actually going the speed limit at the time. Guess that's a Chevy for ya, lol. Anyway, over time the transmission went out and I let it sit at Mom's for a few years. Eventually rust got the best of it and I sold it for $800 to a neighborhood kid. Not sure what happened to it after that. I wish I could find it.

My first car was this 1968 charger. The usual arguement with my dad was I need a car to get a job. He thought I needed a job to get a car. After the wheeling and dealing and begging he agreed to loan me the money for a car. It came down to a Bronco or the charger. Hmm, tough decision. I drove the car everywhere, everyday. Looking back there are a few instances that really make me think, "that car shouldn't exist today." To this day it still retains all it "high school years" road rash but I have settled down some. Maybe soon here I will be able to give it the rotissary restoration it deserves.
