I got another project goin need some advice on paint!
Hey guys I got another project going on now. But sadly can't keep this one, I bought it to fix it up and sell (which is my dream business). First off its a 1940 ford pickup. I know its not a mopar but its pretty rare and its a very cool little truck.
It's going to be a few weeks before I am ready for paint, but I figured I would try to get some advice in early. I am wanting to do a two tone paint job, black on top and candy metallic flake green on bottom. First off what colors are needed and what kind of paint should be used to do the candy metallic flake green?
Second, should the whole truck be painted with the green before the black is put on?
Also how long should I wait before I start taping off the second color? I mean I don't want to feel the truck and it feel dry to the touch and start taping it off and finish the second color and go to pull my tape off and have the first color stuck to the tape lol.

Don't buy F$*D. (LOL)
I'n not sure what it will take to create the colors and effects that you want or about what you need for a basecoat but I do know that regular pant takes 21 days to fully cure. Now if you have a spray booth and heat room where these pieces and sit and dry properly, you could take them sooner. Then again, I am no body expert.

I have done paint/bodywork, and i cant really 'guide' you. I don't really know what effects you are trying to achieve with the green metal flake... here is one place to get some product guides....http://www.houseofkolor.com/news/HOKDownloads.jsp and the main page for House of Color paints......http://www.houseofkolor.com/index.jsp Of course it is all up to you on products to use and they're ALOT of them out there, some budget minded, some not. If it were me I would prep the TOP of vehicle and get it shot first, (easier to mask/cover the top than the bottom) and you don't have to shoot much past your cut off point. The time frame is not that critical if doing a base-coat clear coat system, the base just has to be dry, 6 hrs min, and i would not be afraid to mask it off and start on bottom color. I hesitated answering the first time I saw this post hoping someone else would jump in but to no avail... The last car I did was a two tone 57 chev imp. was turq and white and thats what i did shot top in the am , 3:00 ish in afternoon taped it shot bottom, next am unmasked top cleared the whole car. btw i did it in a 2 car garage no heat hardly no light and it came out fine about a week later did the cut and buff car looks great. I would get some pics of it but as i said its a "C" word and didn't know if the humor would pass.....Good luck with your project sounds like an intriguing color combo irregardless of the make of car...
also check this link for the flakes/pearls you can add....http://www.houseofkolor.com/speedsha...pes_pearls.jsp

Do your research on paint before you buy. HOK is a popular name but is old technology. They havn't changed the way they make paint since the company originated, not to say it's not good paint though. Contrary to popular belief it's not expensive either. They do have a lot of heavy metallic colors and kandy colors also. Look at Dupont Chromabase also, it's a really good paint and easy to shoot. Which ever kind of paint you decide to go with, make sure you stick with the same brand throughout your job (i.e. primer, base, clear, activator, reducer, etc.) everything tends to work better when the same brand is used. Although I see painters all the time use a different brand clear over their base, that doesn't matter.
As far as masking time, it depends on which paint you use. Most all paints have on the cans their recommended shooting method (gun pressure, flash times, etc.) and how to mix (4:1, 8:1:2, or whatever). Just remember R.F.L., Read the F*@king Label. It's what I was taught when I first started learning about paint and stuff. Didn't mean that offensively, I thought it was hilarious and it has helped me a lot in selling paint to customers at the store. I hope I was some sort of help, any other questions just ask.
