Linkage from Trany to carb

How do you adjust the linkage that goes from the trany to the carb...The car sound great and when i am driving it act like it does not want to shift till I gun it pretty good, At first I thought it was the transmission but it was working fine before and my buddie said it has to do with the linkage.

that linkage tells the trany when to shift. if the linkage is installed right and not bent. basically the longer the linkage the higher it shifts, the shorter the lower it shifts. if it is the one i think it is a spring some where pulls the link foward and the back edge touches the pin on the carb. the slot is if snow jams the kink on bottom by the trans the carb will close to idle. warning when taking the small clips and washers off cover the open hole in the cyl head under the carb with a rag. these parts are hard to find. DONT LOOSE THEM. there should be a washer next to the slot then the clip, a over size washer will jam in the slot. a rough setting is to have the carb at curb idle make the link longer till it just slides on the pin. then turn longer two more turns. if you set it to shift way to low some of the valve body will not have enough pressure causing other trouble. if you could find an unmodded set up would be of great help. if i was standing there i could tell if its right. i have modded this linkage but i DONT recmend it for most people.

ok i forgot about the 3/16 rod. you can get by with out the specl tools if you are careful. the 3/16 rod sets the bell crank at a central point. after it is set and the link to the carb and trans lever is set you can change the link at carb only for small adjustments. some earlier cars are a little different from the ball crank to the carb, but the idea is the same. thanks racer i have never seen that video. do NOT set it for very early shifts, the hydraulic pressures will off so much the trans might slip.

The tool just hold the rod in the forward position.... So yes you can make the adjustment without the tool....

What are the shift points?

One thing you have to remember. If the transmission has ever been, what we call reprogrammed or had a shift kit installed. The shift settings we be later and firmer.

O.k. that makes more sense to me now..That video was very helpful and opened up whole new world that I can screw up and try to fix...I guess I can get one of boys to get under the car and hold it forward while I adjust the top part....

on a 65 300L.i had i didnt like the shift points. it shifted to soon at light throttle and to high at heavy throttle. so i modded the linkage ratio at the bell crank. the hole that the carb rod was in at the bellcrank, i made longer. this slowed the speed the lever at the trany moved. then it stayed in gear a little longer at light throttle , but short shifted at heavy throttle. the mood is easy but i kept the factory point in case it didnt work.
