Missing Vin
Missing Vin
I am about to purchase a 70 challenger really cheap. The Vin number is missing off the dash does anybody know what happens after that is the car salvage title is it worth/can I get a Nother Vin will the state police issue me a different vin completely? Is it even worth buying the vehicle?Clueless on this one any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
Don’t buy it!!
It not worth the potential hassle trying to get it on the road legally!!
There are other VIN locations on the body if they are still there if not the car is a parts car…
It is possible that the VIN was removed and used on another car body or some illegal activity causing your car to be impounded.

Missing vin
He says he has the title and I’ll check the locations on the car. I’m going to see it in person. He says the title obviously should match the locations on the car. I looked into it quickly on line If you have a state trooper, they can issue a whole new Vin but the car will be a whole new Vin number. I don’t believe it will be the original. Looks like it back to homework a little bit. Thank you.
I’m not saying you can’t jump through all the hoops and get a legal car on the road BUT it’s almost impossible to know if the car is legal at the time of purchase. The seller should do the work before offering it for sale…. No Exceptions!
You need to realize that the vehicle with a VIN removed can be confiscated at any time by state or federal law enforcement. You have a title but it doesn’t necessarily prove you own the vehicle, even if you can title it as it was VINed originally because the tag is gone it might be on another vehicle and a new title made, it only gets messy from there. At best you might end up with a bonded title the worst case is no car no money and in jail. Why fk with it?

True! Its a 70 challenger originally 383SE but no rust primed ready for paint jammed already, it has a 440 6pack running and driving before taking it a part, for 9,000 so worth the look I gusse.
I should say that I have over 40 years of experience dealing with the DOT concerning collision repairs along with restoration and salvage vehicles, I personally would not haul or allow a vehicle with the VIN removed in my shop because the risks are to high...

If you decide to purchase the vehicle ID the seller to verify he is the owner, if the vehicle is not in his name run away as fast as you can.
there is a reason there is no VIN number on the vehicle and he has not taken care of it....

I happen to have a bit of experience with the laws (38 years police) in our state of Massachusetts. General Law - Part IV, Title I, Chapter 266, Section 139 . It's a felony to remove etc a vin. The state police do not replace or change vins. If you do purchase this car be careful it's not stolen. Receiving stolen property is another issue. Many people have resurrected old cars needing vins. It can be done. The Registry of Motor Vehicles in our state handles VIN applications.
I didn't mean to ruin your day Mariopar69 but just be careful before buying and getting stuck with a useless piece of metal. I just wanted to give you my thoughts as a retired guy with background on this subject.
Yha after anther phone call and some more questions he never replied with the address to see it, so I think he realized that I wasn’t going to be the one to try what he obviously was trying to do! Thanks for the info. Dose any one know a good place to rebuild a dash cluster it’s a 70 challenger

You need to realize that the vehicle with a VIN removed can be confiscated at any time by state or federal law enforcement, moreover, you won't be able to check the condition of the vehicle https://epicvin.com/vin-decoder You have a title but it doesn’t necessarily prove you own the vehicle, even if you can title it as it was VINed originally because the tag is gone it might be on another vehicle and a new title made, it only gets messy from there.
