need help identifying engine

hello, I am having a bit of trouble identifying an engine. although i am a huge ford fanatic, unfortunately i do not deal with mopar much and need help. The numbers on the block are 318 under neath the driver side head. however the valve covers have only two bolts on the inside of the valve cover much like a chevy center bolt head but at either end and only 2 BOLTS. and much to my surpise when removing the two bolts and taking the valve cover off there was a shaft mount rocker assembly with the exhaust springs right on the end of the head on the exhaust side and the intake springs right at the intake side as if no or very little runners. kinda like a hemi head but the spark plugs are not angled and on the outside like a conventional head. the exhaust ports are like a fords with the ports evenly spaced and not like a chevys with the two center ports being right next to each other. i have done much research and i am not a novice with engines by any means but this has me completely stumped. distr. is in rear. oil filter all the way in back on passenger side. the exhaust manifold casing on left side is 2268189 which in my research brought up a reg. 318 made from 62-65 but when brought up a picture looked nothing like these heads. no casting numbers are seen on top side of head. please help, im extremely curious. thanks in advance

It sounds like you have a Poly 318 which was made up thru 1966 When they introduced what everyone thinks of as a small block Mopar. LA318

I'm sure you have a poly head from the description of the valve cover bolts. This was called the "A" engine as opposed to the later "LA" engine, which consists of the 273, later 318, 340, and 360

Many people INcorrectly call these a "wide block 318" but the fact of the matter is, if you pulled the pistons out, and laid a poly block next to an LA block, you would have a difficult time telling them apart!! I believe there are differences in the freeze plugs, I don't remember the rest.

These are good engines, but performance accessories are few and far between.

Not mine:
