problem with my 318 poly

problem with my 318 poly

I have a 65 fury lll with the 318 poly. New plugs, wires, and converted over to a HEI distributor. I got it timed correct. It will sit and idle fine and rev up but seems to respond to slow when I rev it up. Put car in gear and no power under a load. Pops out the exhaust. Friend said it could be a wiring issue. Something about car being setup on 9 volt and me putting a 12 dis. In it. Any ideas ???

Where is the timing?

How did you hook up the dist?

Is this one of those integrated "ready to run" affairs with the module inside the dist? If so, Yes, you need to bypass the ignition resistor.

Yes its one of those dis. The directions said the 2 wires coming off the dis. Hook to the + and - on the coil. But it wouldnt start. My friend said hook the red wire from dis. Straight to the battery. Did that and it tried to start, we then ran a hot wire from battery to the + on the coil and it fired right up. I've ran it with the timing at 10* and 8* but still same prob.

Im reading about the ballast resistor and that I need to bypass it.

Yup. You have to "run" voltage when in start. The start voltage comes from the key in start. Therefore you need to hook the original ballast wiring together and hook that all to the coil + and hook the RED dist. wire to coil +

Now would be a good time to find out if you have a voltage drop problem in your harness.

Take your voltmeter and clip it to a solid battery source like the starter relay "big stud." Turn the key to run. Hook the other probe to the key connection at the ballast. You are hoping to read a very low reading and the lower the better. More than a couple - three tenths of one volt means you have a drop in the harness (mostly connections). This also causes battery overcharging as it provides low (sense) voltage to the regulator.
