Question This rich??

Can a carb be so rich that it causes alot of black smoke and soot? or what else could it be? It leaves alot of black soot on the ground behind the tailpipe. Help please.

That can happen if the engine is running too rich, And if that is happening, it is WAY to rich. Does it smell? Have you tuned the carb at all?

no, I just started the car for a couple of secs. and it smoked alot and turned the ground black. The carb. is messed up because after a couple of secs it floods. I just want to make sure that its rich, not burning oil.

I got the carb to stop flooding and the car idles good and when you press the gas it revs good but it still smokes alot. The smoke color is white. what could this be?also the gas in it was pretty old so would that cause some of the smoke? Would water in the old gas cause the white smoke?

Water in the gas would keep the engine from running, depending on how much water is in the tank. White smoke is usually coolant. I would go through and check all your fluid levels, top off what needs to be and start her back up and let it get up to operating temp. From there recheck all the fluids. plus check the compression of each cylinder. This will let you know if there is ano of them with leaks.

Maybe it liked and need the water in the tank to run.

No, serriously, you need to prime the line. There is no fuel getting to the carb. If your fuel pump is old or weak it will likely only work well with fuel in the line. Just having air in the line will cause it to just "dry pump". Dump a little LITTLE!! fuel down the carb a couple times while cranking and that should get you there.

exactly
all the fuel went away when you changed the filter
do what he said, it after cranking for a little bit, she'll fire up.
check your spark to see what color it is

i got all the air out of the lines and still no start so i pulled a plug and it was wet with gas. Could the distrib. cap and rotor be bad? Maybe it had enough spark to ignite the old gas but no the new gas? I just changed out the plug wires. What could it be?

if the plugs are wet with gas, let them dry and test them or use a spark tester.

I got it to start, it was just flooded. The carb is just messed up. I got a carb rebuild kit coming so that should fix my problems.

Just be carefull when you down the carb, if you havent done one before. What type of carb is it? 2 or 4. holley or carter? THeyre all easy to redo. but you have to watch the little parts, make sure you hae a nice clean area on the work bench so you can place each item in turn as you down it. Run into probs. let us know ,well do what we can to talk you through it.
