7-1/4.....9-bolt rear cover.
8-1/4.....10-bolts, evenly spaced, cover is almost perfectly round.
8-3/4.....No rear cover, round.
9-1/4.....12-bolt rear cover.
9-3/4.....10-bolts, cover has about 6 uneven straight edges.

there is a tag about the size of your thumb under one of the screws that will tell you.

You can also pull the cover and look at the ring gear as it should say the ratio or give you two numbers that when divided give you the ratio (ring gear tooth count and pinion gear tooth count), or you could count them yourself and divide the ring gear by the pinion gear.

Also depending on the axle there will be a tag like C4C mentioned and/or a tag that is being hels on by two bolt on either side of the diff cover.

DK ya have it backwards... turn tire (or tyre....lol) and count driveshaft revs.... its going to be the one turning faster than the tires, and one turn of drive shaft wouldnt tell yo cause the tires wouldn't make a full revolution.. and i think they suggest to do 2 tire revs, then divide X2... dunno why ..... but i know ive read that somewhere. I just go 1X it gets to with-in .01 or so... depends on mfgr (ie 4:10 vs 4:11)
