Went to the track this weekend

Most often when someone is using Nitrous you will see them purge the system. This is to remove all the air from the lines and have the nitrous right up to the solenoid/nozzles. I had the idea that without purging the system, I would have a softer hit. The nitrous would come on a little slower and the hit would not be as instant. Unfortunately, there was 250 HP worth of fuel pouring into the engine upon launch and it drowned the engine ( I hadn't figured this out yet) and it caused the engine to nearly stall when it launched. So after a brief moment I had the idea to hit it again. Same result. I was worried that something had broken so you see the brake lights come on. Then, I thought what the hell, I have already blown this pass, one more try! I hit it once again and for the third time fuel poured into the engine and through into the exhaust. Then, all of a sudden the nitrous showed up, everything lit all the way through the exhaust....BOOM. It was much louder than what you hear on the video.

Fortunately nothing was broken besides my spirit and the car lived to drive to the club meet the next day. I will be adding a purge system and going back to try again. I will keep everyone posted.

That stinks Steve. I'm surprised that the mufflers stayed together if nothing broke. Good to hear that you were able to still drive it.

Steve, you are very lucky... I have cars burn up from a nitrous blow-up..... At least it was in the cylinder... If it had lit off in the intake it gets ugly real fast!!!!!!!

Atleast you didn't pull the hood off in front of a dumbass track employee standing there.

I once saw a guy have a nitrous fire, and he was just gona blow it out, or was checking it out, and a guy runs up with a fire extinguisher. "no don't even! its fine!"

the idiot still sprayed it right down the carb. Man, some peoples kids.

Glad you didn't break anything

First, thank you to all for the well wishes. Yes I was lucky. I preach all the time about doing it right the first time. This is an example of why! I knew I should have purged the system and I thought I knew better. I screwed up and got lucky. It doesn't matter if you are not doing it right because you don't know how, or if you are doing it wrong because you think you know more than everyone else. Wrong is wrong. Take advise from those that know better and have been down this path. Yes, if it had been in the intake or in the heads it would have been much worse. A "Hood flipper"! I have seen fires from this as well.

Yes the entire exhaust is welded. I am using copper exhaust gaskets in conjunction with sealant. I had the dumps open and that helped I am sure but even with those open, spectators remarked about the flames that came out of the tail pipes.

Nitrous can be your friend, but just like a friend when it gets pissed off it can get very ugly, very fast. I'll be doing some plumbing and I'll be sure to post a follow up run.

Having said all of this, It was still FUN AS HELL!!! Racing is like sex, you don't have to be good at it to have a great time.
