1996 dodge dakota hood won't shut

Ive been having trouble trying to figure out how to fully close my hood on my truck.

I went to open the hood the other day and once i tried shutting it it would not fully close. the latch works but the hood is still in the position that it is at when you initially pull the hood release from inside the cab. Ive tried shutting it with quite a bit of force and it won't work. Any ideas?

also, the hood release lever feels loose. could the cable for it be stuck in the unlatch position?

Thanks!

just off the top of my head. the release part ( thats on the body ) might not be returning to the starting place. this would stop the hood pin from getting grabbed when you close the hood

Thats what I was thinking. is there an easy way of fixing this? it seemed like i would have to get behind the grille to access the release under the hood.

if the hood is not up you should be able to pull the safety catch and get it up. then get some WD-40 or other lube and lube the mechanism. or the cable is sticking. some times a second person is helpful to move the lever under the dash. while you watch the release mech under the hood. WD-40 is a bit thin for some things. i like thicker oil. even engine oil would fine in a pinch.
