440 Conversion whoas
Helllo all
My friend has a 75 duster with a slant 6 in it
he has done the interior and exterior of the car nopw he wants a new heart. ( i know he did it backwards) Anyways i tried to convince him to drop a small block in it but he wants big block, so he are my questions:
Its only the major stuff im worried about right now, and it will be my first major implant on something thats older then i am.
Small block conversion
How much fab? engine mounts, direct bolt in? trans mount?
have to change sub/k/ frame at all?
is there another model the sub frame will work from?
Talk to a few ppl, they tell me a 340 360 will work, almost bolt it have to redrill the transmount hole 1 inch back, any truth to this?
Big Block Conversion
Have a 77 440 and 727 trans from some boat of a car, i cant remember the name of it....sorry.
Engine trans mounts ? Fab?
Change sub frame? if so what model? besides the obvious stuff, like shift linkage, fuel line, wiring, rad hoses, fan set up, driveshaft possible steering linkage issues, anything else thats gonna make me regret this conversion?
I guess i should ask these questions to....
Im new to this old stuff, so at the risk of sounding retarded, what model type is the duster?
Will this conversion work? either one?
anyone live in calgary alberta that can give me a hand? can pay, not sure how deep my buddies pockets go tho....
oh and one more thing, its a one off custom, and it looks amazing.....so if anything is do able please throw a brother a bone, this could be a big step in my life, and i dont want to skip it.
Thanks for your time.

Hello,
The Duster is an A-body, to put a 440 engine in it from a slant 6 will be a major job, BUT it is possible.
First of all, if the car has power steering and power brakes, you have to remove them, it won't fit.
Anyway, you have to change the k-member (or weld new engine mounts... should only be done by someone with experience).
You will have to change the rear axle into a 8 3/4, the slant six rear axle won't last long, but it will last longer with a 340 or 360 engine.
Shift linkage may be the same, if the Duster already have an auto-trans, wiring is different, some engine bay cables is to short to be used on a big block engine, but will fit fine on a 340 or 360 engine.
Fuel lining, I my self has a 1962 b-body that had a slant six, I now have a 413 engine and I haven't change the fuel line, but maybe its different on an a-body?
You will also need a new radiator, and shorten the driveshaft (only if you use a 727 trans which you have to if you swap to a 440 engine, with a 340 or 360 engine you can use a 904 trans, who has the same sizes as the slant six 904 trans).
My guess is that you can use parts from Plymouth Valiant, Dodge Dart and Dodge Demon 74-76 (maybe earlier and later model years?).
The easiest way is by far to put a 340 in the Duster, you can get alot of power out of those. A guy in my neighberhood has a '69 Dart with a 340 engine, with some modification, and that Dart outrun many big block cars.
Good luck!

You can put a smallblock in that thing WITHOUT changing the K-frame!!
You can put a 440 in it without changing the K-frame.
Very important...you need to look up schumacher creative services at;
www.engine-swaps.com
you can even keep your power steering. These guys have all the solutions for the swap you are thinking about. Motor mounts and headders for the exhaust.
Look 'em up.
