440 heads...suggestions?

I have a 440 in which i plan on putting in my 1966 Power Wagon. but, my main problem now is I dont know what to do for heads

does the chamber size change anything?

Is Edelbrock any good?

why are the intake and exhaust valves different sizes? and what are the stock sizes for a 440?

What's the biggest set of heads i can get without having to change the rockers?

is it better to buy bare heads and build them up or just buy a complete set?

Welcome, you should have posted this in the general tech section. Will need more info: how do you plan on using the power wagon? off-road,daily driver, racing? What cam? how deep are the pistons in the hole? Tire size and gear ratio? Auto, convertor size/manual trans? Tell us about any work done on the short block.

good luck,have fun!

2x on what John Van said; we need to know more
what year is the 440? they got different heads throughout their existence.
edelbrock heads are good.
chamber size determine your compression, flame front, rpm range, etc.

the 440 is a '77 and out of a cop car. i plan on using the Wagon for truck pulling and a weekend driver. I'm not sure of the gear ratio. the transmission is a manuel 4 speed run to Dana 60 rear ends (front and back) with 35" tires all the way around. as for the cam, the guy i bought it from said he put a slightly "hotter" cam in it. unfortunately, I dont know much about it. hope this can be a little conclusive

Burda, how deep are your pockets??? The '77 440 is way down on compression, something like 8.2 to 1.To get big power out of it,you will need new pistons to raise the compression up. Did it come with heads? If it did,see if the casting number is 4006452.That was the stock head used in '77.If the engine runs,I would just use it as is.
The stock 440 has a lot of low end torque which is what you want in a truck. It can be built for a lot of power, but that will cost $$$$$,after all it is a mopar!

just my .02 worth! john

915 closed chamber heads will help a bit with compression.
eddy heads are good, 440 source heads or good, indy heads are good n pricey. i hear that procomp heads are good too. that's just from ppl i know that use them but they have fords.
valves are different size for a reason. the intake is bigger because gas and air comes in. gets burned, then whats left gets pushed out the exhaust which isn't much.
there is no reason to change rockers for any stock head and most after market will take stock rockers they are all the same.
build or buy a complete head. building can be cheaper but time consuming. complete bolt on heads are ready to go.
